I happened to stumble across a Christian radio station the other day and listened for a while to see what it was like. I was appalled by the stupid reasoning, the oily pretentiousness, the outright lieing and the promotion of dubious health supplements.
The chief emphasis of most of the material seemed to be to induce feelings of guilt, fear and in-group smugness in the listeners. Oh, yes, and to get people to send money.
Do people really take that guff seriously? If they do, how do they stay sane?
Faith and Belief?

The Sith Lord of Christian Radio
My wife and I live in Ontario, her family lives in Chicago, IL. When we visit, we drive through the Detroit, MI area. Which is the home of 103.5 - The Light, where Bob Dutko (the 't' is silent) delivers every day from 1pm-4pm.
We've nicknamed him everything from Count Duku to Bobby Douche-ko. His methods are (as you mention) very apalling.
The most underhanded is his selection of guests whom he debates about the Christianity with. To anyone generally listening, he's getting people involved in biology or evolution or any other arguement counter to his own. However, to anyone who specifically listens to the "guests" Bobby-Boy picks to be on his show... they're just stupid. My cat could win a debate against them.
Bob is so worried about his own shaky position, that he doesn't allow anyone with an IQ above a paperclip to come onto his show and attempt to discuss things with him. He's really funny to listen to
And yes, the show is littered with the following advertisements:
-Health supplements
-Things that help you poop better
-Marriage counselling
-Bible sales
-Donation begging
-Car maintenence (Quote - "Maybe God made your car break down so that you come to _______ to have it fixed!")
Bob Dutko himself even promotes each and every one of the advertisements.
My wife and I find it hilarious and we enjoy laughing at Bob, and feeling extreme pity for anyone who actually falls for agreeing with the show. It's 3 hours that are never missed on our 10 hour drive between our home and her family's home

Yes. Poor souls...
If they do, how do they stay sane?
The art of shifting blame and responsibilities along with a dire need to be included in the "Christian Circle."
"God works in mysterious ways..."
"God only gives you what you can handle..."

Yes, it is hilarious. When I have had a hard day at work, I listen for a few minutes driving home. A good laugh, and a few moments of feeling superior are a good spirits-lifter"

Re: The Sith Lord of Christian Radio
Here in Denver, the local Christian Radio is KRKS and I admit to listening to it most of the time, though not actively. After many debates with jar at Dreamcatcher Forum I finally accepted the idea that evangelical christianity was a business and that yes, christians in America often had a smugness of feeling blessed, special, and anointed. So why do I still listen? It makes me feel good sometimes to hear a sermon from
one of the radio preachers. Besides...the babbling puts me to sleep. The radio is never off in my bedroom.

No, no, your legs are still safely the same length.
I must admit that I am constantly amazed at how dumb the stuff on those stations is.
I would like to know, however, if what goes on in fundamentalist churches is anything like what I hear on those radio stations. I very much hope that is not the case.

My favorite.
When I lived in the Washington, DC area, I used to listen to WFAX-FM. Best of the shows, in my opinion, was Dale Crowley Jr., who's so hard-core that he only does 15 minute broadcasts and still has no website. No sales-pitch, no products, no guests, no family issues, nothing but raw KJV-based rage. He was awesome.
Edited by ZenMonkey, : No reason given.

Dude! He came to us as unwanted as swine flu.
He had a shitty show for a few months called The Graham Norton Effect on Comedy Central. The worst thing about that is (and I don't think he had anything to do with it but fuck him) it replaced another show, Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn which I was going to be featured quickly on as a "fresh new face" comic.
I'm bitter, yes, but I'll be on next year on the show Live at Gotham. - IPU willing.

Re: Your share of crap to worry about
He's funny because he is gay and rude.
If being gay and rude is intrinsically funny.
That's why he's not funny.
By the way and off topic:
I guy I know is an aspiring stand up and he is having anxiety problems. He has a 45 min routine and he keeps mentally rehersing it before he sleeps. The problem is he gets to the end of his first chunk (about 5 mins in) and he starts to loose his motivation and he starts for the top again.
As a result he keeps rehersing the first chunk for hours. I've advised him to cut his act down to 'chunks' and not try to learn the whole thing in one go.
Any advice I can give him?

Sadly, it is. Folks tend to be drawn toward finding answers and sources of authority rather than questions and content. Folks tend to want to run with the pack rather than think independently for themselves.
Folks like the idea of being blessed and feeling special, rather than rolling up their sleeves, accepting responsibility, and doing their best without being able to blame Satan or the Democrats for their problems in life.
