So the people have spoken and they want Mubarek to go...NOW!
Mr.Mubarek says that he is tired of being in power, but warns that if he steps down now, the banned group of Muslim Extremists will take power. The U.S. is stepping in to ensure that this wont happen. I agree that the government formed should be secular. Does anyone else have any insight on this developing situation?

Does anyone else have any insight on this developing situation? Yea: it's none of the United States Governments fucking business! How would the US feel if WE protested OUR government and other countries came along and said "whoa whoa whoa there Americans....WE know what's best for you."?
the banned group of Muslim Extremists will take power. Ahh, the "extremists" who are shielding the christians while they pray..... "What can be asserted without proof, can be dismissed without proof."-Hitch.

just so you know, it was the Christians who were shielding the Muslims...not the other way around. My point, however...is that no religious government should be in power. It IS our business. This country has enough problems trying to get back on its economic feet without having a Theocratic bloc of competition.

wow! I had read another source indicating the opposite...but this is encouraging! Still, I think that governments should be secular and not Theocratic. That was my primary point.

Thanks jar. However, I swear I saw a more recent article that was during the protests.

wow! I had read another source indicating the opposite. Contrary to what the US media will report...the protesters are peaceful and working together. It isn't until Mubarak's henchmen run through the crowds with vehicles and weapons that there is violence. Hell, even the police were starting to side with the crowds before the military stepped in. I too think that a secular government is better than a theocracy, BUT, why should I have any say in what form of government some other sovereign nations chooses for itself? Yea: it's none of the United States Governments fucking business! That's too simplistic. We have to protect our allies...

Phat writes: The U.S. is stepping in to ensure that this wont happen. You make it sound like the US has been sitting on the sidelines for the past thirty years. Egypt/Mubarek/dictator/human-rights-violator/importer-of-rendition-suspects-to-torture is/has been America's second biggest beneficiary of US foreign aid (mostly military) after Israel. Don't worry though. If Egypt becomes all democratic and human rights friendly, there are plenty more dictatorships that America can continue to send their child suspects to be tortured.

We have to protect our allies... Protect them from....what exactly? Ahh, right. We couldn't POSSIBLY allow another nations people to protest to get what they want. No no no...that would be too democratic of them. I sure hope some of our allies come to OUR governments aid if WE ever revolt.... What, are we the World Police? Yes, we are. Where have you been? We have troops all over the world (e.g. Germany, Japan, S. Korea) that serve as deterents to further violence. Our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are serving mainly as police. When there is unrest the rest of the world does look to the US for help. In fact, many countries are pissed of at the US for not involving themselves in African genocides. Also, it is in our best interest to be the World Police because it allows us to shape world events in ways that benefit us.

Muslims shielded Christians during recent Christmas services; during the protests, Christians have shielded Muslims during prayer. (Or at least so news reports have claimed.)
On the broader question, change in Egypt will clearly be a good thing, unless it's change for the worse, in which case it won't. Mubarak is clearly about to be forced from office, unless he isn't. Opinions from the ill-informed, like mine, should be ignored.

I realize that, effectively, we are. But for us to actually start seeing ourselves that way is seriously fucked. For us to think the entire rest of the world should be just like amurrica is a very self centered and egotistical....AMERICAN way of thinking....
