One of the annoying things about spam messages is the resulting bump. That is, the spam makes it appears that there are new on topic message in an otherwise inactive thread. It would be a nice feature if after admin has identified a message as spam, the spam message was ignored as a new message thereby removing the "bump" of inactive threads.

I like the suggestion, but it has practical implementation constraints for any automated approach. I can add this issue to the agenda for the next moderator meeting. We prefer not to delete any messages ever, openness and transparency is an important goal for EvC Forum, but perhaps we should make an exception for pure spam in old threads since it can inappropriately bring old threads to the top of thread lists.

Is there a possibility that you could have a separate spam thread. Any spam would be moved to that spam thread. And the spam thread itself would be hidden from people not logged in, so that search engines don't see it. When moving to the spam thread, a subtitle could be added that indicates what was the original thread. Fundamentalism - the anti-American, anti-Christian branch of American Christianity

There's a feature that is occasionally but consistently requested: message copying and moving. This would make possible the solution you suggest, which I like. Honest spammers would simply post to the spam thread and save us the trouble. I'll put it on the todo list.

OMG, that's the best idea I've seen. Give the spammers their own section or thread! Page Not Found | Viagra.com

Computer Valley - Proudly Canadian and a proud supporter of spam! Is there a construct that you could bang a identify email intellection. Any spam would be emotional to that email thought. And the spam mentation itself would be hidden from people not logged in, so that explore engines don't see it.

I had a thunk about this.
One of the things that the spammers have in common is that they join just to spam, so their post count is usually 1 in their first spam message. Would there be a way to ensure that new members are limited to a certain number of posts a day until their post count reaches some arbitrary number? The spammer who tries to post to multiple old threads, mucking up the "All Topics" list wouldn't be able to. If an automated system then moved all their posts to a "Spam" thread, it could then be perused by mods incase someone innocent had been caught by the system. I have no idea if this is possible, but I'm sure I've seen new member restrictions on other internet fora.

Re: I had a thunk about this.
And they often post to older threads (which is why they mess up the "All topics" page) Maybe a "do you really want to do this?" dialog should be created if someone tries tpocketed a reply to a thread that has been inactive for more than a certain period of time (6 months? 3 months maybe?) - with the default as "cancel" just to be sure. It'd be a good way to warn people trying to reply to long dead thread, and I think it would trap robo-spammers, too.

and they also tend to post the same thing, so a filter that "you have already posted this message" could be used to block them.
