My grandson just told me about this video. It has had about 10 million hits in a couple of days. It is, if I and millions of others have not been duped, the internet at its finest. It is bringing people of all faiths and beliefs together in a fight against unbelievable cruelty and injustice.

The world can become a better place.

It is a 30 min video whose objective is to make famous a man whose lack of any sense of humanity has been the cause of unbelievable horrors for tens of thousands of our African neighbours. The idea is to make him famous so that he can be identified, captured and brought to justice but most importantly, so that he can be stopped.

KONY 2012

Here is a Canadian news article about the video.

Bring Kony to justice

He has told you, O man, what is good ; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God.

Lies
Kony is just a poor christian protecting himself from muslim oppressors, just ask Buz

Now our Army is aiding and abetting the ruthless Islamic regime in Sudan who was burning villages, crucifying Christians, burning down the homes of Christians, killing and persecuting Christians to the point that, like now in Egypt, the Christians were forced to organize a resistance to save the lives of their families and avoid being forced to convert to Islam which was why the ruthless regime persecuted them.

Message 162

or noted drug addict Rush Limbaugh

"Lord's Resistance Army are Christians. They are fighting the Muslims in Sudan. And Obama has sent troops, United States troops to remove them from the battlefield, which means kill them,"

who i suspect Buz got the initial story from and then in true Buz fashion managed to mangle every "fact" in relaying the story.

God separated the races and attempting to mix them is like attempting to mix water with diesel fuel.- Buzsaw Message 177

Re: Lies
Obviously Kony is anything but Christian. He invokes the name Christian in an attempt to legitimize what he is doing. This movement against him is as far as I know organized by secularists but it is something that all Christians, Muslims, atheists etc should support. (I'm pretty sure Jesus does. )

In defence of Buz I have a hunch he just saw that the LRA had a Christian label attached to it and jumped to conclusions.

I noticed that our PM is one of the political leaders they have targeted. I hope he responds.

Sure Kony is a Christian.
I see absolutely no reason to claim that "Kony is anything but Christian". He is a member of a Christian organization and calls himself a Christian.

He IS a good idea of what life would be like if the US ever became a Christian nation.

Re: Sure Kony is a Christian.
I realize that this is the Coffee House but I would prefer to keep it about encouraging people to do something positive as opposed to trying to score debating points.

If anyone is interested in supporting this cause, here is a link to where the Kony 2012 kits are available.

This seems pertinent: Guest post: Joseph Kony is not in Uganda (and other complicated things)

tl;dr: Kony is an evil man, but that video does not accurately represent the current situation.

Re: Sure Kony is a Christian.
shouldnt we be just as outraged though...if we ever became an Islamic nation? If we can't be Christian, (or they over there) it should be defacto secular.

It does seem to me that this man is responsible for more deaths than Bin Laden. Shouldn't the west be just as concerned about justice in his case as they were for Bin Laden?

Also, just because the organization is weaker it doesn't mean it couldn't be revived under Kony or someone else.

I am unsure of your point. Do you mean NOT concerned at all about justice or Kony? . . .

bush jr regarding bin laden, March 2002:

Who knows if he's hiding in some cave or not. We haven't heard from him in a long time. The idea of focusing on one person really indicates to me people don't understand the scope of the mission. Terror is bigger than one person. He's just a person who's been marginalized.... I don't know where he is. I really just don't spend that much time on him, to be honest with you.

October 2001: US Military Downplays Importance of Targeting Bin Laden
Edit event

On October 8, 2001, Gen. Tommy Franks, Central Command commander in chief, says of the war in Afghanistan, We have not said that Osama bin Laden is a target of this effort. What we are about is the destruction of the al-Qaeda network, as well as the Taliban that provide harbor to bin Laden and al-Qaeda. [USA Today, 10/8/2001] Later in the month, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld makes similar comments, My attitude is that if [bin Laden] were gone tomorrow, the same problem would exist. Hes got a whole bunch of lieutenants who have been trained and theyve got bank accounts all over some 50 or 60 countries. Would you want to stop him? Sure. Do we want to stop the rest of his lieutenants? You bet. But I dont get up in the morning and say that is the end; the goal and the endpoint of this thing. I think that would be a big mistake. [USA Today, 10/24/2001] One military expert will later note, There appears to be a real disconnect between what the US military was engaged in trying to do during the battle for Tora Bora - which was to destroy al-Qaeda and the Taliban - and the earlier rhetoric of President Bush, which had focused on getting bin Laden. [Christian Science Monitor, 3/4/2002] Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Richard Myers will make a similar comment in April 2002 (see April 4, 2002). [Christian Science Monitor, 3/4/2002]

October 12, 2001: President Bush Decides Against Attempting to Seal the Afghanistan-Pakistan Border to Prevent Al-Qaeda and Taliban from Escaping

There is no denying that closing that border was a hard job, but if the NSC did not believe that the best military in the world could close the border and trap bin Laden, why did it decide that the task could be safely allotted to the poorly armed and trained and generally anti-US Pakistani forces? Late October-Early November 2001: Al-Qaeda Fighters and Bin Laden Said to Move into Jalalabad without Hindrance
Edit event

In late October, US intelligence reports begin noting that al-Qaeda fighters and leaders are moving into and around the Afghan city of Jalalabad. By early November, Osama bin Laden is said to be there. [Knight Ridder, 10/20/2002] Counterterrorism tsar Richard Clarke will later recall: We knew from day one the likely places that bin Laden would flee to. There had been lots of work done before 9/11 on where did he hang out, statistical analysis even. We knew Tora Bora was the place where he would be likely to go. People in CIA knew that; people in the counterterrorism community knew about it. We knew that what you should have done was to insert special forcesRangers, that sort of thingup into that area as soon as possible. [PBS Frontline, 6/20/2006] Knight Ridder Newspapers will later report: American intelligence analysts concluded that bin Laden and his retreating fighters were preparing to flee across the border. However, the US Central Command, which was running the war, made no move to block their escape. It was obvious from at least early November that this area was to be the base for an exodus into Pakistan, said one intelligence official, who spoke only on condition of anonymity. All of this was known, and frankly we were amazed that nothing was done to prepare for it. [Knight Ridder, 10/20/2002] The vast majority of al-Qaedas leaders and fighters will eventually escape into Pakistan. In 2006, Newsweek reporter and columnist Michael Hirsh will write that Bushs decision to ignore accurate intelligence about bin Ladens presence in Tora Bora in favor of realigning the USs war effort to focus on the gathering threat of Iraqs Saddam Hussein was a strategic blunder that ranks alongside Adolf Hitlers decision to invade the USSR in 1941.

It is my opinion that the boogeyman, Bin Laden, was more useful alive for Bush Jr. to use against terrified and ignorant americans while invading Afghanistan to capture energy resources and establish hegemony in the area. I don't think it is a violation of Godwin's law to compare war criminals Bush Jr. and Hitler.

Now, if Kony's environment had energy resources or strategic significance like Iran does, I am sure Obama would suddenly find him "threatening" too.

Sure, I hope we nail the bastard. However, the film doesn't accurately portray the current situation. I'm a big fan of accurate information.

But Sudan and Uganda has greater proven oil and natural gas reserves than Afghanistan.

And the US has NOT captured and controlled oil fields in either Afghanistan or Iraq.

Sure, I can't disagree with that but it appears to be close enough that something should be done, and it shouldn't be done on the basis of oil but just because it is the right thing to do.

It seems to me that in one way the major issue here is how the internet can be used to get this type of message out to the world with the result that it empowers the average individual, (for better or for worse), in a way that has never been the case before. More than ever we are a global community and the African peasant is my brother.

The US has sent 100 individuals over there to help. How many times could something like that be done for .1% of the cost of the war in Iraq with far more positive results.
