EvC again has chat, a useful feature at times. This version as of yet does not have colors, or the ability to italicize or bolder type. It must be a free version (or low cost) that Percy found.
Communication is always a fascinating topic for me. On the one hand, a posting board has advantages over real-time chat in that one can have the time to say precisely what it is that they want to say.
On the other hand, spontaneous conversations allow for different interaction.
(Come one come all...visit chat. )
chat allows quicker reactions than does instant messaging.

Perhaps that is too broad a subject?

Tradition and heritage are all dead people's baggage. Stop carrying it!

Thoughts about chat
what I mean is, do we want this feature and if so, how deluxe do we want it to be?
as an aside to Percy, I miss the colors...(didnt we have them before?)
but if this version is a lower manageable cost, it may go over ok.
Before, when EvC had chat, jar and I (and occasionally Jon and PD) were the only members who used it.
Jar likely wont use it again unless he is asked to be chatroom administrator...im not sure how busy he is these days compared to last year.

Re: Thoughts about chat
Like it says in the BIG RED link at the top of the forum page:
quote:
Percy in Impossible to Miss Link:
AddOnChat now offers a free version, so chat is back. It's in the main menu bar at the top of the page next to All Topics. It lacks advanced features and (they claim) includes advertising, but hey, did I mention it's free?

Re: Thoughts about chat
Well, I personally would help pay for a more advanced version. Not a large amount, but I'd chip in $5.00 if we could get a few of us to do that, we could have a deluxe chat with rooms, colors, and lots of bells and whistles!

Re: Thoughts about chat
If chat is that important why not just set up an IRC channel. I think chat is probably a waste of resources for this forum.
Just my 2 cents

Re: Thoughts about chat
you are likely right, Theodoric. Before, as i said, we had 3-4 members use chat regularly...out of over 1000 registered members who could have yet did not use it.
The fact that its free is good. It can serve as a quick communication device between any members.
It is no substitute for a well written post

Please, no. I don't want that.
While at the site, I keep the "All Topics" page open in one tab, and read posts in a second tab. And I want that "All Topics" page to remain unchanged until I have finished reading all of the updated threads that I wish to read. It is easy enough for me to refresh the page when I am ready.
Sorry for the OT reply. Now back to your regularly scheduled discussion of chat.

But it will just show you the topics with new posts. Not sure how a autorefresh hurts you..

Going to make use of this function soon, I like it!
Does anybody use a specific room in the chat. or is it just empty atm?

I'm all for chat, it takes me back to my early days debating creationists when I frequented the Yahoo! science chat rooms.
I'm with Theodoric though that arranging a common IRC chatroom name might be a better solution, but if the previous instance of chat is anything to go by there probably wouldn't be enough traffic to try and establish a permanent channel just an ad hoc agreement to use something like #EvCForum on a specific IRC net.

One big difference between the two chats is that the old one kept a list of on the main page of people who were in the chat.
That was a nice feature.
