For this holiday season, let's imagine what we would do if we were president.
This would have to be things to do by presidential decree.
For example
If I were president I would:
Decriminalize all drugs, not just marijuana, and treat drug addiction as a medical condition rather than a crime. Pardon all non-violent inmates that were convicted of drug crimes that would not exist under the new decriminalized drug program.
Enjoy

If I were president, I would try very hard to find someone actually suited for that office and abdicate in their favor.
But I doubt that’s going to happen.

Here is a link to article 2 of the constitution:

Section 1: President and Vice President
Clause 1: Executive Power
I understand that Christmas is the season of Santa Claus, Rudolph, and Frosty the Snowman. But the president has enumerated powers and is limited in his ability to contravene state law. That limitation is deliberate.

Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Thoreau: Civil Disobedience (1846)

Here Is The Problem
The whole problem in my mind is what I would owe those who voted me in. Unless somehow I managed to somehow just magically become president, I would owe my voter base a bunch of promises and also I would have to conform to the image that I presented to the public when they voted me in.

You would owe them nothing. You would be in office to serve the interests of the nation, not merely the interests of those who voted for you.
Unless somehow I managed to somehow just magically become president, I would owe my voter base a bunch of promises and also I would have to conform to the image that I presented to the public when they voted me in.
No. You would have made those promises (really, commitments, not promises) to the nation, not just to your voters. So, yes, you would have a moral responsibility to attempt to live up to those commitments. Or course, circumstances may intervene and modify that moral obligation.

Assuming I just got innaugurated
I would overhaul health care. I would get a team of wise people that was bipartizan and unbiased towards either conservative or liberal consensus. We would examine the health care in other countries and decide on a fair and balanced solution to the American dilemma. If I made Big Pharma mad, tough. I would include this expense in taxes. As for tax reform, I would weigh the pros and cons of the ACA and of the Republican overhaul and would personally announce my findings to Congress. I would make it clear to Congress that I was seeking solutions for the people-at-large and not simply the wealthy ones, though realistically I would attempt some sort of compromise as we would need the tax base that the wealthy provide.
I would attempt to make a smaller, cheaper, yet more efficient military equipped with the latest hardware and would scrap older programs if they proved too costly. One thing I agree with Trump about is that the US pays far too big a proportion of the worlds bills. I would, however, attempt to represent myself in a rational manner when conversing with global leaders and I would attempt to get along with them.
The more I think about it, the more I realize that this job isnt easy.

Long ago I read a book in which the fictional President had a very low opinion of the opponent that he had defeated. Then there was a national crisis which, after due deliberation, was averted. The President concluded that there had been only one reasonable and acceptable course of action and even his idiot opponent would have had to do the same thing if he had been elected.
Sometimes circumstances override ideology - unless the President is a raving megalomaniac who doesn't mind sinking the ship.
