I was recently forced (in my administrative role) to moderate an out-of-control humor thread. (ironic, isnt it?) Our member,Faith, was getting dogpiled by our other, more liberal posters and responded very emotionally strongly in the Humor thread. I've hidden that exchange as it was out of place in the humor thread but thought that perhaps we needed a thread about hate all of its own.

So EvC Members...here it is. Please save your emotionally charged exchanges between each other (usually politically) for this thread. Perhaps one of you from each political ideology might start the thread out by explaining why your side (be they Left, Moderate, or Right) is the least hateful group among them.

It has always been my contention that human nature transcends political boundaries. We have Left Wing Racists and Right Wing Racists. As A Christian, I realize that all have sinned...including Christians. This thread is not about one ideology over another. It is simply a place at our forum for ranting at one another. I will not moderate your potty mouths here, (nor your attempts at humorous jabs at the opposition) but I will insist that all hate or reaction to hate be addressed at this thread.

If anyone is opposed to the concept of a "hate thread" please feel free to also address that here. And by the way, Faith---I am trying not to pick on you specifically...I feel that the situation at the humor thread was not entirely your fault...but I will stand by my decision to suspend you for a bit. I likely will unsuspend you before the day is out, but I insist that any strong emotional replies be saved for this thread only. This goes for all of you.

  • Please stay on topic for a thread. Open a new thread for new topics.
  • Points should be supported with evidence and reasoned argumentation.
  • The sincerely held beliefs of other members deserve your respect. Please keep discussion civil. Argue the position, not the person.

Lot's of Big Moderator behavior in the thread but exactly which of the hidden posts other than those by Faith expressed anything approaching hate?

    Hate Can Take many Forms
Ridiculing her propensity to get mad, even if they are attempting to get her to loosen up and realize that her side also has bias...was inappropriate in a humor thread. Teasing someone who gets overly angry is a form of hate. Its like teasing the disabled kid at school for the funny reactions he evokes. All I was doing was attempting to reclaim the Humor thread for the sake of humor.

The basic argument should not be suppressed...it should just not be in the humor thread. And I think that the cartoon about Obama was hateful also.

    Bitter Laughter

This was an article you may find interesting. It talks of the biting political humor and the not so subtle hate behind it from Mark Twain and HL Mencken.

    ...

The picture of Obama was a way to call me a racist for objecting to something that had no racism in it. The usual Leftist tactic of trying to destroy your opponent.

It's not about race, it's about political ideologies
Rewriting this post to get the angry rant out of it:

I did condemn that picture of Obama on that other thread. I also pointed out that my motives aren't about race, that I would have liked to have Alan Keyes for President, that I like Clarence Thomas' Constitutional thinking etc. If I had a problem with race I couldn't support either of them. I'd also add that I like what I've heard from Thomas Sowell and Allen West, both blacks. I also like Dinesh D'Souza who is from India. Etc etc etc. It's about politics and ideologies, not race, and the same is true for Trump.

I'm trying to stop the angry reactions even to the things I hate so i'm rewriting this one among others:

There was no call to put up that picture, the original subject was not race. I'd never seen that picture before and certainly don't approve of it.

Re: Hate Can Take many Forms
There was no wit or humor in AZ's original post that I objected to

Not that you could see but that’s ok, others did.

Humor very often has a sarcastic caustic edge to it. That’s what makes it funny.

You didn’t like it so you blew up. I really could not care less.

My post was not a response to you, was not directed at you, and had nothing whatsoever to do with you.

You chose to take offence on your own volition.

You sidetracked the Humor thread, not me. And you were fucking hilarious.

Without your hate for all things liberal we wouldn’t have had a need for this “Hate” thread.

You should be ashamed of this little bit of legacy you left here.

Quite the rant. I guess you are OK with that kind of material from the right wing.

I put up that picture to emphasize that kind of material comes from the right wing too. The vast majority of such material is blatantly racist.

    General Apology
Just a general note: I don't want to continue blowing up at people here. Every now and then I try to stop it but end up going back to it anyway. I have a strong angry streak and it easily overwhelms me. Of course if I were being careful to seek Jesus every day as I know I should He would no doubt have a tempering effect on me, but I don't and at some point I feel that angry reaction rising up again. That's inevitable I suppose on a forum like this where I'm defending positions that oppose those of the majority here, as long as I don't stay close to God.

I've been reading some of the poetry of German Protestant mystic Gerhard Tersteegen lately, and his insistence on Jesus' teachings to die to ourselves, love our enemies, bless our persecutors and so on is having a good effect on me. So far so good. When I erupt again, which I hope won't happen but there are no guarantees, I hope I'll at least remember sooner and correct course.

So this is a general apology. I've been rewriting some of my more intemperate posts and will continue as I discover them. Since they've often been quoted by others you don't need to worry about losing a record of my excesses.

    Thanks.

    Re: General apology
Faith, that was off topic for the Hate Thread! The whole point of the thread is to be hateful, not to repent! (Just kidding, I appreciate your honesty)

Allow me to take up the cause (of hate).

I too will be quite honest.
Things I dislike about authoritarian conservatives:

  • They want to make America great and let the rest of the world fend for itself. The more religious among them seem to place Trump on a pedestal, thinking that he represents their interests. Trump may well not be racist(though I don't see evidence of this) but he most definitely looks out only for Americans and shuns the idea of altruistic globalism. So in essence I'm mad at a rich guy who appeals to his base of domestic working class trying to make it in life. At the expense of the rest of the world! Jesus would be more of a socialist, in my mind.

    AND YET.....(here is the irony)
Things I dislike about progressive liberals:

  • Overall, they hate Christianity for its authoritarian tendencies as well as its claim to exclusivity. They have the audacity to think that humans invented God and Jesus and they want to help every darn family in the world even at our (United Staes) expense! They want to help every darn needy person IN the United Staes even if it means that MY future might be less comfortable as a result.

In other words, I do fight myself at times, as ringo asserts. I am an uncomfortable moderate. I dont trust the liberals (or even Jesus) enough to simply give without stashing. I consider it my divine right to stash and to be allowed to do so.

In essence, I hate conservatives that are wealthier than I am who want to keep (or diminish, or take)my money, and I hate liberals who are voting for me to be forced to help people poorer than me...especially those from other countries.

This is my sinful carnal nature talking. In a way, I hate myself at times.

    Re: General Apology
Yes it is off topic so if I'm able to stick to it, which I fervently hope I can, maybe I shouldn't post on this thread.

Things I dislike about authoritarian conservatives:

They want to make America great and let the rest of the world fend for itself.

This strikes me as very strange for more than one reason. We have responsibility for America, don't we? Certainly that's the job of our President, to protect and defend and promote America. And through conservative eyes America has been unfairly attacked by the Left for decades now, reaching a pinnacle under Obama who truly seems to hate the nation. The Left has a strongly anti-American bias to the point of seeking our destruction. I felt this even back when it got its powerful sixties impetus. The rallying cry about America being "imperialist" was a vicious joke to my ears. America that defended Europe in the last war with our own blood and spent our own money to rebuild it? Imperialist? I wasn't very political at the time but I would have said I was a liberal just because everybody around me was a liberal. It took a while, in fact it took becoming a Christian, to recognize that most of my feelings were conservative. It hurt to hear America put down by people who seemed to have no idea what America was about, but I didn't know how to answer them until much later.

As for caring about the rest of the world, ONLY AMERICA HAS EVER CARED ABOUT THE REST OF THE WORLD, so to put us down for that supposed lack is a horrifying lie. But we can't help anybody if we are weakened from within which is what has been happening thanks to the Marxist influence in our universities, that has been growing since the sixties. This is why we need Trump and need to be saved from the Marxist-inspired hatred of America which will only turn us into a third world swamp. Trump is far from perfect but he is THE ONLY PRESIDENT WE'VE HAD FOR DECADES WHO GETS WHAT WE NEED. I wish he were better at bringing it about.

I'm sorry you think Jesus would support socialism or that socialism has anything to offer America. I think we need a return to the kind of education that would help us all understand better why this is NOT what we need, the kind of education that was at least nominally presented as a requirement in all the universities until the sixties Marxists started dominating them. There used to be required courses in American History and Institutions and Western Civilization in all the universities. The Marxists got them thrown out, so as a result we have generations of university graduates who have no idea what our history is and think socialism is just fine because they've never been taught anything else.

I get that you are torn between some liberal positions and some conservative ones, and that discussion could get well beyond my abilities pretty rapidly, but the idea that people who are wealthier than you are have any desire or ability to deprive you of money is a liberal lie.
