If (athiestic)evolution is true then we are nothing but a series of chemical reactions. Because the theory is that long ago the water mixing with the minerals on the earth and the gases in the atmoshere eventually produced a "primordal soup" that had the ability to produce self replicating proteins and eventually life in a drawn out process of spontaneous generation. And istead of breaking down and reaching some type of equilibrium they incredibally continued to become more complex over time, and become human. So therefore it could be concluded that we are the end result of a long and ultimately random chain of chemical reactions starting from the time when water began moving over the lifeless earth.
If this is true can we truly make our own decisions, in other words control what chemical reactions take place. And if the part of us that controls what chemical reactions take place is in itself made up of a bunch of chemical reactions can we ever truly make our own decisions. And if we could, could we ever trust our own decision since we would have no control over them (being just chemical reactions). Because no matter how complex a chemical reaction someone could make whatever was left in the end could never be anything more than chemicals. And even the thoughts that we think or the fact that we know that we are thinking would have to be a result of the movement of matter and energy going through us.
Or if we have a soul that is higher than our body (which is just chemical reactions), what chemical reaction made this soul form, and what are the chances of a series of chemical reactions creating a soul, would there be any other theories that we really have a free will if someone believed in Athiestic evolution?
Or is it possible that God created man with a soul, that although influenced by the body with all it's chemical reaction would be capable of making a decision contrary to it based on some higher principle.
Or is it impossible for us to make our own decisions. And since you can't trust your own judgement because it might be based on a chemical imbalance how is there any chance of knowing what is right or wrong decision?
The thing with evolution and creation is that they both require us to look back further then we can see, so we have to rely on evidence we have now to determine what happened in the past. I would say that since people are capable of having a conflict within them about what they want to do and what they know would be right, even if what they want to do would be benificial to them, requires more than chemical reactions and actually would take a conscience, and something capable of operating outside of the realm of matter and energy, (which is just chemical reactions) a soul or spirit perhaps.
So do we have a soul, or are we animated meat?
