Riv Biol. 2002 Sep-Dec;95(3):379-412.

The history of the human female inferiority ideas in evolutionary biology.

Bergman G.

Northwest State College, 22-600 State Rt 34, Archbold, Ohio 43502, USA.

A review of the prominent late 19th-century biological writings reveals that a major plank of early evolution theory was the belief that women were intellectually and physically inferior to men. Female inferiority was a logical conclusion of the Darwinian world view because males were believed to be exposed to far greater selective pressures than females, especially in war, competition for mates, food and clothing. Conversely, women were protected from selection by norms that required adult males provide for and protect women and children. Darwinists taught that as a result of this protection, natural selection operated far more actively on males than on females, producing male superiority in virtually all intellectual and skill areas. As a result, males became "more evolved" than women. The women inferiority doctrine is an excellent example of the fact that armchair logic often has been more important in building Darwinism than fossil and other empirical evidence.

G. Bergman is Jerry Bergman, author of "Vestigial Organs Are Fully Functional: A History and Evaluation of the Vestigial Organ Origins Concept (Creation Research Society Monograph Ser)", "The Creation Evolution Controversy: A Bibliographic Guide from 1839 to the Present: Books (Garland Reference Library of Social Science, Vol 282)", and innumerable essays and articles in various creationist rags... I for one would not be real proud of having articles published in that venu...

Is that where all this "Hitler was an evolutionist" crap originated from?

Nothing like a little psychobabble to get the masses up in arms!

I don't doubt that 19th century biologists held prejudices that were otherwise common during the 19th century. I certainly don't feel the need to affirm, excuse, or share these beliefs.

Followers of organized religion, on the other hand, have always been much more progressive in their attitudes toward women. Right?

As I see it, you are repeatedly (directly or obtusely) attacking Salty, and not Salty's position. Also, there is no need to argue against Salty's position, as it has been done enough. Especially since Salty is not currently taking part at this forum.

Forum guidline 3) Respect for others is the rule here. Argue the position, not the person.

This is your warning. A posting priviledge suspension is next.

I agree wholeheartedly.

I remember the surprise as I read "Origin of Species" when I came to the part where Darwin says that a white man would obviously quickly become the leader of a black tribe, but his superior evolutionary traits would be lost as he reproduced with the black tribe.

I remember reading about uproars over his theory of descent with modification guided by natural selection, but I don't remember reading about any controversy over his racism, even from Christians. I'm sure most agreed with him.

The 19th century is the 19th century. Moses' various acts of genocide belong to an ancient era as well. Those who live in glass houses should beware of throwing stones.

Incohrent ramblings
I just happened by and noticed that MM and Scott are still taking pot shots at me. I can only wonder why. I have another note coming out in the September issue of Rivista di Biologia entitled "The case for instant evolution". That should serve to once again inflame the atheist, gradualist, selectionist, mutationist mystics that continue to adhere to the most tested and least substantiated hypothesis in the history of science.

Re: Incohrent ramblings
Welcome back Salty.....actually, this is the first time in ages that you have come up (as a negative example no less). In any case, Scott was actually pointing out someone elses article in this..ahem..respectable ..academic ...journal

Re: Incoherent ramblings
If that is so, why is Scott being threatened (again) with suspension? Let us hear from Scott. I am sure he has some wonderful insights to offer. salty

Re: Incoherent ramblings
I see your self-titled post is as filled with intellignet discourse as your typical ARN/Brainstorms/EvC posts ever were.

I posted what I did to give yet another example to support the suspicion that Rivista, despite its 'age' (you have previously felt the need to poiunt out that the journal has been published for - what was it - over 100 years or something?) it has become something of a clearinghouse for fringe, especially anti-evolution nonsense.

So, were I one trying to proclaim the superiority of my ideas by pointing to thei venu of publication, I think I would prefer a more legitimate source.

This is sort of like a journalist bragging about getting a piece in the Weekly World News and demanding to be taken seriously.

So - do you have a red SUV?

Re: Incoherent ramblings
Salty posted this to this thread's former address while it was temporarily still open:

I see Scott is still erupting on schedule like old faithful. I don't know where he got the idea that I am not an evolutionist. Just because I have, like many others, rejected Darwinian foolishness does not make me a bible thumping fundamentalist. salty
