I didn't know where else to put this so I put it here.
Anyway, recently Phatboy made a comment about D&D glorafying the "evil one", and that was one particular tidbit of urban myth that allways threw me for a loop. When I was in high school, I used to play D&D with a few friends. It was kinda geeky I guess, but hell if we didn't have fun. After all, using your imagination is allways a great passtime!
So, i liked the game. But at that time, I was in a christian school BTW, alot of the other kids and teachers gave us funny looks, and commented on the greivous sin of Dungeons and Dragons.
After much research, and as a former player of the game, I can pretty conclusively say that the game has no satanic content, or evil glorafied as good.
So, I was wondering if phatboy, or any christians who still subscribe to this belife, have ever actually looked into the game before branding it, and it's players, as 'satanists by proxy' or somesuch?

Of course they haven't. I assume they think "role-playing" a sorcerer involves actually dripping a pentagram in sheep's blood right there on the table. Never mind that that tends to ruin your character sheet.
Any Chrisitans here who think D&D is satanic, I'd be happy to run a game for you. I'll even figure out a way to represent the Christian God as a game deity for you to bop unbelievers into your church.

Re: D&D and satanism
This is an old joke, but I saw it recently on an IIDB thread about D&D; it still made me chuckle.

While we're waiting for Christians to jump in, why don't we all talk about our characters? I usually play Roderick Van Helter, a dashing fighter/rogue with an eye for the ladies.

heheh... I loved Dark Sun.
That was my fav. world. I playd a thri'kreen who was ostrasized by its hive. Living in Tyr fighting in the arenas for profit and honer I eventually had my own little mob of arena slaves and exiles.
It was real fun. One of my friends playd a ferel halfling with a quick temper, and a penchant for biting knees. The other person who playd with us, playd an elf warrior. She was the "good guy" of the grupe who kept us all in order.
It was really neat cuz our DM structured the campain with us doing all these tiny little quests to get us to define our characters, and somehow he managed to pull them all together into one gigantic adventure. Needless to say, those were some fun games.
And like a really good D&D session goes, we spent most of the time "role-playing" and not rolling dice.

Word. Though sometimes you gotta throw down, kick in the door, and put some loathsome abberations to the sword, you know? I love playing the role but dungeon crawling is fun, too.

D&Deviancy
I have a tiefling fighter/rogue character with a massive persecution complex and a fondness for pairs of envenomed swords. (For some odd reason I'm addicted to characters that fight two-handed---must be Drizzt-envy or something...)
Unfortunately, I haven't played pen and paper D&D in a very looooooong time, since most of my gamer friends have moved out of state or become fundy Xtians.
Right now I'm playing around with NWN and starting to toy with module design for that program. (Tilesets, baby. Gotta get 'em all!) Also, I've taken to collecting rule books and supplements for 3rd edition---which, BTW, is the best edition yet. My most recent purchase is the Underdark supplement.
--Macavity
P.S. Yaro, I totally LOVED Dark Sun. I wish the wankers at WOC would reissue that stuff.

The only experience I've had with Forgotten Realms is the NWN campaigns, but those were fun. I'd pick up the FR sourcebook but it's like 40 bucks.
I'm all up into the Oriental Adventures book (I played a great Legend of the Five Rings campaign before they went to d20), but that's the only supplement I have.
What is Dark Sun? Isn't that part of the Forgotten Realms stuff?

This is going to sound awful, but I never even looked at the price of the FR sourcebook. (I'm not rich, just irresponsible.) I don't remember it being 40 bucks, but that's probably cos I was buying it with a handful of other stuff at Barnes and Nobles. I buy way too many books. It's an awful habit, especially since there's a library right down the street.
Dark Sun was a whole different world setting that came out a bit after the original FR boxed set, AKA "The old gray box." I guess it came out about, oh, maybe 1990 or so. This was back in the day, when D&D was still a TSR franchise. You can find out more about Dark Sun here:
Welcome to nginx!
It was just a fantastic game world. It's a damn shame WOtC doesn't pick it back up.

No thanks!
I'm a christian,and I have good reason for it.
I just hope and pray that others will look deeper and find that God really is who he says he is in the holy word.

Keep cool Desdamona. It was just a question.
It takes from your reply that there is no visible relation.
