So I'm in my 2nd semester in the Doctoral program in Physical Therapy at the University of Kansas Medical Center, doing what I can to get through alright, working with my classmates on various projects, when it dawns on me that one of my classmates has a bit of a familiar last name, and she happens to live in Topeka, KS. So just out of curiousity, I do a Google search on her to see if what I surmise is true, and I'm completely taken aback:
Page not found – North Texas Daily That's her on the left. I happen to have a few projects involved with her this semester, and I can't think of one good reason why I shouldn't spit in her face. Of course I won't, but this puts me in an unbelievably uncomfortable position that I really have no clue as to how to approach this in a mature manner. Any serious commentary and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL!
LOLOLOLOLOLOL! ROFLROFLROFL! Ok, now that that's outta the way... don't bother. The phelps's are a bunch of psychos. They are like a little cult. They don't listen to reason. I heard an interview with one of them and it was the worst flamewar of seething hatred I have ever heard. My advice to you, is make sure she dosn't breed.

How did Ms. Phelps get the education necessary to enter a doctoral/professional program?
Why is she in a professional program instead of preparing to be a good homemaker for her future husband? Next time you're doing group work together, when there is a pause in the work for socializing, casually bring up the topic that Jesus was probably gay.

How did Ms. Phelps get the education necessary to enter a doctoral/professional program? Chiroptera, all the Phelps's have Masters and above! Most of them in Law. They are all indoctrinated by their dad and live in close proximity to each other. I'm serious when I say they are like a little cult. Check this famous article out: NameBright - Coming Soon

Wait, wait wait.
You go to school with the daughter of FRED GODDAMNED PHELPS?!?! Firstly, I pity you. Second - medical school? How can someone who actually supports the murder of homosexuals and believes that AIDS and other STDS are punishments sent from God possibly hold to any sort of medical ethics?! I'd talk to the school's administration, and maybe to the medical ethics board. It seems reasonable to assume that this person will not practice medicine in an ethical manner. She certainly has the right to her beliefs, no matter how monstrous, but if she's going for any kind of medical degree, she will be bound by the rules of medical ethics. Forgive me if I'm not as coherant as I'd like to be. I'm still in a state of "Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot?!" Every time a fundy breaks the laws of thermodynamics, Schroedinger probably kills his cat.

quote: LOL! Okay, seriously, what should I do? Is it unprofessional to go to the Dept. Chair and ask her about this? Well, check that, the Dept. Chair let her into the program - nevermind. More thoughts, please.

quote: Do you think such standards would apply to the School of Allied Health (Physical Therapy)? She's currently a PT assistant, so I would have to disagree that she doesn't want to practice in her field accordingly. As to whether or not similar ethical standards apply, honestly I don't know.

Okay, seriously, what should I do?
Ignore it. Pretend that you never discovered this. But it's okay to secretly feel sorry for her, in that she was brought up in an atmosphere of hate.

If she's going to practice ANY form of medicine, she will be held to the same ethics requirements as doctors, so far as I understand.
Forgive me - I posted in haste and shock, as well as revulsion - the Phelps' Klan have that affect on me. She is entitled to be able to gain whatever education she desires, including medicine (physical therapist or doctor, whatever). I'm concerned that, if she is to use this knowledge, she may discriminate against homosexuals or other groups she believes to be "damned." But at a school, I suppose there really isn't anything to do, except hope that there is some miniscule chance that she'll realize how monstrous and un-Christian Fred Phelps' belief system is. Every time a fundy breaks the laws of thermodynamics, Schroedinger probably kills his cat.

I know nothing about the Phelpses but I guess I should read up on them soon. They are clearly outside the pale from a Christian point of view, preaching God's hatred of sinners instead of God's offer of salvation to them, and setting themselves apart, seeming not to recognize that all of us are sinners.
But the repressive impulses expressed on this thread are more of a problem at the moment it seems to me. Freedom of speech and all that guys. And there is NO reason whatever to suspect that their religious and political beliefs would affect their ability to practice either the medical or legal profession conscientiously -- any more than the religious and political beliefs held by all of you should be suspected of influencing you to partisan injustice.

That's a fascinating picture.
Two conservative extremists standing on an American flag. I haven't seen that before. (The "God Hates Fags" bunch is old hat.)

quote: That's not very encouraging. I grew up in Kansas, and have spent my entire adulthood life in Lawrence where I have my undergrad. degrees at KU (or as the Phelps call it, "Gay-U"). I know the Phelps family well (unfortunately), and the last thing you can do is believe a member of their family will supposedly "come-around". That's like asking a fundie creationist to give up their beliefs (oh sure, one in a gazillion do, but the vast majority stick to their core).

I agree with nwr. Think of this as a test of your professionalism. Like it or not, you are colleagues, and you are required (in my opinion) to respect her as a colleague unless and until you are certain she is violating the ethical standards of the profession.
But you aren't required to socialize with her outside of school or professional activities.

Heh heh. That was my first thought, too. Not too surprising coming from the Phelps, but the juxtaposition did take me back for a second.
