I downloaded the Plan9.iso.bz2 file from the Plan 9 download page. I know how to work with an iso image, but how the fuck do I make a bz2 file into a boot/install cd?

Essentially its just a zip file with an iso file in it. You need a program to un-bzip it. Then you'll end up with the iso file and you can continue on your merry way.

You do know that Plan9 is not linux? Also, why stop at Plan9, why not Habenero?
They are neat ideas though.

Do you definitely want Linux or would you consider Solaris?

KNOPPIX will run from a CD.

To Mod: Thank you for the link. I installed it this morning and to my amazement it is the most annoying operating system I have ever fiddled with. I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually...
To jar: I had no idea plan9 wasn't linux. I was stumbling around while on my journey to understand other OS when I stumbled onto plan9. I'll try Habenero next.
To RAZD: My favorite so far is Ubuntu. It is by far the easiest linux distro I have ever tried... and I've tried 8.
To Ringo: They all can run from a CD.

There is a whole line of OS from Bell Labs, Plan 9, Habenero, Inferno and others. They are fun. Plan9 may well set some standards for distributed computing.

I know. I meant that KNOPPIX runs entirely from CD. I can boot it when I want it and otherwise use Windows - on my old machine with 2GB hard drive.

Ok.
Regarding your old machine, may I suggest you harvest parts from other old machines to put in your machine? Since I'm a cheap bastard, I didn't want to spend money on harddrives even though I needed more space. What I did was I got 2 old computers from my cousins and put those harddrives into my also old machine. I also harvested their memory cards and put them to use.
I'm guessing you're either using 95 or 98, correct? Anything beyond 98 takes up about 1.5 GB, leaving you with just enough space to have a few meg of porn... I mean files.

Owing to the deficiency of the English language, I have occasionally used the academic jargon generator to produce phrases that even I don't fully understand. The jargons are not meant to offend anyone or to insult anyone's intelligence!

Run from CD? Cool
That looks like what I want Ringo, I can run from CD and not worry about virus hitting OS and keep backup on all my (critical) files. Thanks.
