Well, I was lucky enough to come across a lithophane demitasse on eBay and I thought you good folk might be interested in seeing it. It's most likely from the 1800s but may be some more recent copy.
Lithophanes were quite popular in the 19th. Century, often found in windows, fireplace screens and even fans. They were made of porcelain or egg shell china, and made by first creating a beeswax mold and then pouring the ceramic. What was left was a section with varying thickness that when lighted from behind would show a picture, often a landscape. When normally lighted from the front it would simply appear as vague bumps.
So, here is the cup and saucer.
Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!
