The W.A. Sheaffer Pen Company was one of the iconic American Brands; their pens with the small white dot recognized immediately all over the world as a very high quality product.
During the mid seventies the company was bought by Textron and then eventually by BIC and is now a division of BIC USA. As so often happens, production was moved from Ft Madison offshore and now Sheaffer pens are being made in China, Italy, the Czech Republic and only a USA repair depot remains in FT Madison.
Now Sheaffer from almost the very beginning was manufacturing pens in countries other than the US, in Canada and Australia and Brazil and Argentina, so a non-US made Sheaffer is certainly nothing new, but when BIC closed the plant and sold the properties, they were going to simply throw away all the old archives.
Fortunately a group of ex-Sheaffer employees and some FT Madison residents stepped up and founded a non-profit Sheaffer Pen Museum that hopes to eventually catalog, restore and eventually display much of the material on the history of this iconic American company.
Now they have added a website where some of this material will be available online. It's still in its infancy and evolving but hopefully will grow into a great place to visit. If you get a chance drop by
the website and if you are anywhere near FT Madison, Iowa, maybe put it on you list of places to visit.
Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!
