I remember watching a documentary some time ago about this, in the documentary the multiple limbs where the result of a parasite entering the embrio toad, causing it to have multiple limbs because the second part of the parasites developments acures in a stork and a les nimble frog is more likely to get eaten.

It was a while ago and i was not that interested after i found out it was a parasites fault so i forgot most of the details.
