Does anybody here have knowledge of or experience with TV soundbars? I would appreciate any information, recommendations, or warnings.
While I am quite satisfied with my flat-screen TV's built-in speakers, my friend is herself an audiophile who has complained in the past and currently just tolerates the situation. I do not have room for a full-blown sound system, nor do I feel any need for such an extravagance nor would my common-wall neighbors, I'm sure. A soundbar seems to be an ideal solution for me, but I don't know much about them (I just learned of their existence a couple weeks ago).

Yamaha YSP-2200
I just bought one.
Yamaha YSP-2200. I guess you would say it is middle of the road. I am a bit of an audiophile(or at least was one until my hearing started to go to shit) and have had a 5.1 surround system, but my wife told me our new house will not have speaker wires in the living room. So a soundbar was the choice. I am quite impressed with the sound. It does a fantastic job of giving a 5.1 experience.
It has a microphone so you can calibrate the sound for the place you are most likely to be in the room. It isn't cheap but not high end either.
The best I found was $589 at Ibuysonline
First time I bought from them but the service was good and they shipped quickly.
Seems if you want anything more than a basic soundbar(which your friend will hate) Yamaha is the choice.

Re: Yamaha YSP-2200
I very, very nearly bought the Yamaha too. (I also had the same wife issues - why is that?)
Good review here: Yamaha YSP-2200 review | What Hi-Fi?
I didn't buy it in the end because of it's apparently poor stereo performance - I elected to lift floorboards, dig channels in walls and redecorate the room for a 5:1 system. I don't know whether the sacrifice was worth it....these:

Re: Yamaha YSP-2200
Probably worth it.
I agree about the stereo on the YSP-2200. There simply is not enough separation. Since this is planned for the room my wife will be mostly watching TV and movies I think it is perfect for that. Right now when I listen to music I put it on one of the DSP settings.
When the new house is ready I will have an entertainment room. There I will feed everything through my Pioneer box and I have a Yamaha 5.1 speaker system. As I said before my hearing isn't what it used to be so I am not nearly as discriminating as I was. My only dream is to add Sonos so I can control everything(even outdoors, I have Bose outdoor speakers) from one place.
I think I can convince wife to do this. Considering what we are paying for the new construction, it will be just a drop in the bucket.
