I’m thinking this topic could be interesting so I would like to take it from the graveyard to an open field.
In the “Tribute” thread:
Tany:
Message 1257 For me, 97-99% of sitcoms are just too fucking stupid and repetitive to be bearable, but half an hour or so of good comedy each night just before sleep really helps me get to sleep and have untroubled sleep.
Theo:
Message 1258 My problem with them (is that) the vast majority are based on embarrassing people.the laughs are cheap.
The reason this rang for me is because of an addiction I have. I must have The Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama
The shear inanity of the plots are comedy gold to begin with, then add the periodic quips of intellect these guys throw at you and … this is my favorite entertainment … after football … and EvC and masturbating, and … well it falls on the list somewhere up there pretty high.
Now that’s friggin funny.
I will not find a people-based sitcom of the same inane comedy because physics won’t let you do that stuff but I miss the quick visual and verbal darts we used to get from Get Smart and Monty Python.
So, what is your fav of today? Of yesterday?

I really like Monty Python. I have never seen any of those other shows.

What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence. -Christopher Hitchens

Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts

"God did it" is not an argument. It is an excuse for intellectual laziness.

If your viewpoint has merits and facts to back it up why would you have to lie?

The More Things Change the More They Stay the Same
Newton N. Minow, Chairman of the FCC in the early 1960's, said this in a speech to the National Association of Broadcasters in Washington D.C. on May 9, 1961. I'm sure everyone's heard the one famous line. After praising a number of shows from the previous season he says:
Newton N. Minow:
But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite each of you to sit down in front of your television set when your station goes on the air and stay there, for a day, without a book, without a magazine, without a newspaper, without a profit and loss sheet or a rating book to distract you. Keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that what you will observe is a vast wasteland.
You will see a procession of game shows, formula comedies about totally unbelievable families, blood and thunder, mayhem, violence, sadism, murder, western bad men, western good men, private eyes, gangsters, more violence, and cartoons.
And endlessly, commercials -- many screaming, cajoling, and offending.
And most of all, boredom. True, you'll see a few things you will enjoy. But they will be very, very few. And if you think I exaggerate, I only ask you to try it.
I don't think TV has changed, and I'm including streaming. Most of what is out there is garbage, but hidden among it all are real gems. We won't all have the same gems, but they will be there nonetheless.
My favorite comedy show is relatively recent: The Good Place

We subscribe to the Britbox streaming service through Amazon Prime. I really like British mysteries like the ones on PBS's Masterpiece Mysteries. Many years ago I watched A Touch of Frost starring David Jason. Last year I ran across a comedy series starring him and became hooked. Still Open All Hours is a delightful comedy about a wheeler dealer corner grocery store owner and all the local characters who shop there. It's a completely different kind of role for Jason, but he seems perfectly cast.
Then I discovered that there was a much earlier (30-35 years earlier) series Open All Hours with some of the same characters/actors which was wonderful and seeing some of the characters much younger and all of a sudden questions in my mind were answered about how Granville, the main character, became the person he is.
Granville can sell badly dented cans of beans from Mongolia to his neighborhood customers by convincing them that it will make them better lovers and in fact irresistible to their mates! He uses this same technique to sell any stock that he's having trouble moving. One of the characters in both series that I loved watching was "The Black Widow," Mrs. Featherstone played by Stephanie Cole who played Auntie Joan in Doc Martin.

My mother loved several British comedy shows, Are You Being Served, As Time Goes By, and Waiting for God. She lived with us for several years, and despite them not being my cup of tea I eventually became very fond of them.
