The catholic church is sending missionaries to african countries suffering in the current aids epidemic too "educate" the populace about the evil of contraception.
If ever there was definative proof of the non-existance of god its the sick shit that gets done in his name. Any bead jigglers care to defend this?.

Meta,
Though not a "bead jiggler" myself, do you have a cite?
Thanks,
Mark

I condemn the first post in this thread for its religious intolerance and bigotry.
As I've said, the quality of this site is going downhill. Even the moderators can't seem to control themselves sometimes.

I'm not thrilled with the wording of the first post, but the point is good.

This is crazy, why would they go over there to do such a thing. I would think if they were to go there it would be to lend a hand help people, show these people the love of Jesus Christ. Not to tell them what to do. I am rarely in agreement with the Catholic church, and i DEFINATELY DO NOT agree to this aproach.
Interesting side not on this one, but did you know that the drug companies last year grossed an insane amount of money. Billions of dollars, when aproached about making drugs and supplies available at a much lower cost to developin nations and to the people in Africa suffering from aids, they simply stated "our share holders would never go for that". How bout them apples eh. All hail the almighty $ ruler on high. Greed. plain and simple, Hey doesn't the catholic church have a huge bank account why don't they supply Africa with medical supplies and drugs. It would seem a better use of $ to me than going over there trying to tell them what to do.

I'm not thrilled with RCC's view on contraception but it seems like teaching them about promiscuity is a good call. I really don't believe that the missionaries are saying "Have all the sex you want unprotected", but more likely, "Keep your pants on!" The latter works even better than condems. Especially if the people are having lots of sexual encounters anyway . Thus the church is not spreading AIDS.

Supplies don't get through Africa well becaue of political instability and lack of infrastructure. Proving them with the insanely expensive cocktails necessary to fight HIV would be impossible. And partial doses are worse than no doses, it would encourage drug resistance. Only a one-time-use vaccine will save Africa

A BBC world service african corespondent, commenting on work being carried out by the international red cross who's members were concerned about foriegn aid agencies competing rather than cooperating.

I agree. Something to this effect probably is what they are being told. The trouble is that it is going to clash with the local cultures and end up not helping and possibly hurting. While passing out condoms is a lesser shock to the culture and may actually do some good. To me, the church is choosing doctrine over lives.

Metatron:
That's an ugly accusation. I'd ask you to provide a substantive cite that can be double checked before accepting that this is true. Much as I disagree with the theist worldview, and question the competence, motivation, utility and even the net negative effect of some (much?) missionary work - especially in sub-Saharan Africa, having seen some of it at first hand - without unbiased data to back your claim I'm inclined to reject it as bigoted ranting. I find it highly unlikely that the primary (or even tertiary...) motivation of any missionary group is to "teach the evil of contraception". The off-hand "BBC correspondent" comment doesn't constitute a useful source citation. Care to try again?

I can't supply you with an online link, however I will contact colleague's in internetional red cross and they can speak for themselves.

In a statement at the end of their week-long conference in Pretoria, the bishops argued that the battle against HIV/Aids should be fought on moral grounds and said condoms helped spread the disease.

Thank you for that David Unfamous. Its not the news item I was referring to but is right on target nontheless. I did not know the catholic church was actively lying about condoms spreading aids. They no doubt regard lying for god as a moral act, thankfully they can no longer burn us for speaking out against their barbarity.
