In Hebrew (as in English) the soul and the spirit are represented by different words (I believe
ruach and
nefesh, respectively). Does this mean that the soul and the spirit are different things? I tend to think they are, possibly that the soul is what you get when you combine the spirit with the body.
The
Skeptics Dictionary treats
soul and
spirit as being the same thing, as do some (many? most?) Christians, like Billy Graham. Obviously, I don't agree with that interpretation.
I do think there is an immaterial something or other that accounts for my ability to know that I exist. I don't know if I would identify it with either the soul or the spirit.
Unless there is some compelling and cogent reason to do otherwise, this discussion should go into the Bible Study forum.
