Hello, everyone. It's been some time since my last login, for I've been completing my first year of university, so I figured I should check in and participate a little, especially considering my recent career change.
For years before I decided to venture into academia and complete my education I worked simple, unskilled labour jobs like restaurants' fry cook, or a pump jockey. Now, thanks to my education I've made the transition to my first academic position, and it's a dream. I have thought about being a scientist for a long time. For years people have been encouraging me to pursue it and I am thankful for that. The success is sweeter than imagined.
That's not why I'm here, though. I'm not here to boast or be anything but humble and participate in friendly, constructive discussion. Hopefully I can learn something from you here, just as I aim to learn every day at work and every day at university. I've always enjoyed debate, especially since my deconversion six or seven years ago, so with my new academic position I'm prompted to return to this forum and say, "Hey. How are y'all and what's your experience been? Ever had a great change in life that gave you newfound motivation? What did you learn from that experience? How did you get there? Where did you go from there? Where are you now?"
See you around!
Addendum: I forgot to mention what position I'm actually in now. I'm working as a research assistant in evolutionary biology. We're studying the genetic structure of local adaptation.

Congratulations on the change! I hope it all works out for you.
Although I never left academia, I made some major changes in direction myself, so I kind of understand how hard that can be sometime.
Best of luck to you, and by all means continue to participate here if you have the time and inclination.
