I've always wondered why it's ok for us to say "heck" and "shoot" and "darn" around children even though they essentially mean the same thing as "hell" and "shit" and "damn".

I had a sixth-grade teacher, Mrs West (wife of Rev. North East West), who told us that those bowlderized words were just as bad as the real ones.....

Sounds good to me. I even attempt to do so. But "living rightly" has very little to do with whether I say "shit!!!" when I get one of these Texas grass burs stuck in my finger when I'm pulling weeds. And I do "excersise self-control" - I stifle it when I am able when small children are around.

An interesting thing I heard years ago that I've never really confirmed: the Bad Cusswords in England and the US tend to be body functions, body parts, and, I guess, body wastes. The Bad Cusswords in Southern Europe and Latin America tend to be "blasphemies" - goddammit and the like.

Anybody have anecdotes to back that up or refute it?
