I've been meaning to ask this for a long time.
What feelings does it raise for you that Bush was chosen for and is your president? Do you think he represents the American way of life correctly?
Just say whatever pops in your mind.
I don't mean any hostility.
Coffee house please..

Judging from recent polls, "dissatisfaction", I think, is the best word to describe the American impression of Bush 43.
For me, personally? Dissatisfaction, yes; but also a sense of relief. Bush 43 has been the most powerful practical demonstration that conservative policies just don't work. Too bad we had to find out the hard way, but maybe now we can put away the country's dangerous flirtation with conservatism and return to mature progressivism.

I'm not sure he represents the American way of life in any respect, correctly or otherwise.
In terms of excess, arrogance, provincialism, short-sightedness, political calculation, and lust for power? I'd say he's the perfect American representitive. All the worst aspects of America, I'd say he embodies. That's why his popularity among some crowds continues and will continue unabated. That's why John Hindraker of Power Line, the conservative blog, once had this to say:
quote:
It must be very strange to be President Bush. A man of extraordinary vision and brilliance approaching to genius, he can't get anyone to notice. He is like a great painter or musician who is ahead of his time, and who unveils one masterpiece after another to a reception that, when not bored, is hostile.

Quick Response
Just say whatever pops in your mind.
embarassed
It may be possible that Bush will not be remembered as the worst president in history, I think that honor is still held by Buchanan who did nothing to prevent our own Civil War.
However, I think he is in contention with Franklin Pierce, Andrew Johnson, and Millard Fillmore for second place.

Outraged and dissappointed in fellow americans.
More so when he was re-elected after they had the evidence of his inadequacy for the task before them.
I apologized to the rest of america after the re-election for thinking they were below average for ignorance and not able to understand at the first election -- and for having obviously overestimating what the average american intelligence level was.
Do you think he represents the American way of life correctly?
Do you mean the american way of life based on the ideals of justice, freedom, liberty and equality?
Not in the slightest: he is an elitist spoiled little rich kid who used position and money to run from the draft, and he is a bully coward using any position of power to punish his enemies perceived or real.
OR do you mean the american way of life based on the average behavior seen on TV and personified in movies?
That's closer to reality, especially when you look at TV soaps as a model of behavior: immoral, conniving, self-centered, etc.
Not that Clinton was a paragon of virture, he's just been eclipsed.
I don't mean any hostility.
None taken, the problem is that we will have to put the pieces back together, if it is possible.

"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

What feelings does it raise for you that Bush was chosen for and is your president?
I don't think he was ever genuinely elected by the American people, but our chicken-sh!t corporate media news won't ask any questions that might mess with their money and so the uninformed and overly-proud American people get robbed. This to me is Bush's legacy... one of deceit and theft both at home and abroad.
Do you think he represents the American way of life correctly?
It's been said before, but I do think he represents an arrogant, self-absorbed side of America that wanted to show it was best for this country. That side, now, would rather just be quiet than admit it was wrong and actually work towards a solution that works.
Having said all that about arrogance and being self-absorbed, I come from Boston, but went to college in Florida. I didn't realize how spoiled I was, as far as being exposed to reason and logic, until I got to FLA. and realized how much religion and fear rule - not just in FLA., but in most of the "heartland" of this country. Now who sounds arrogant and self-absorbed? lol

We Deserved Bush
Unfortunatly I do think that Bush represents the American way of life correctly. That is what is most detestable about both his rise to power, his transformation of our government, and the futility in which most of his antagonists have fought.
Bush represents the heartland of America. He is the average uneducated guy with crazy kids who thinks improving himself means getting a better cut of steak for next Sunday's game after church. His impression of right and wrong is based on his upbringing without regard for external rules, laws, principles, or opinions.
I would have to say that IMO that is the average american. I say this including liberals and conservatives alike as most liberals themselves are actually not very progressive. Voting decisions are based on a few key issues that override any and all general philosophy of the canidate. For example, if you are pro-choice you will probably vote for the dem even if he/she is a total media industry whore. Likewise if you are pro-life you will probably vote for the rep even if they do not display any ounce of other conservative values.
We have no sense of outrage as a nation. We let private companies manage elections with technology that is also private with no concern in general. We tag along to whatever the latest news buzz is like a cat following a flashlight image on the wall. It doesn't matter if it is various government corruption or what really is going on with J.Lo's love live. We simply think that whatever is important is what is currently on the news and we have absolutly no memory of what was important yesterday.
We consider tithing charity. We always want lower taxes no matter what. We are more concerned with what a drunk Mel Gibson said that a piece of legislation that might make what he said illegal. We don't even know the names of our state representatives. We only participate in government on 1 day in November, sometimes, if there is nothing better to do, or there is nothign on TV, and the lines better be short, and I am just going to leave all those things other than president blank.
I think as a country we deserved Bush. WE also deserve the condemnation we got for Bush. I don't think it is going to change anything though because American's will not change due to outside criticisms. Americans will need to hurt to make a change. When one day we wake up and the rest of the world has surpassed us, when we have fallen from our lofty high, only then do I think American's will notice what we have done and how much time we have WASTED!
Maybe.

Uh, yeah, I have to admit that does pretty much sum up Bush. And probably is indicative of 'Merica.
