Re: After only 6 months from new?
Try making those accounts into administrator accounts rather than limited accounts, and see if that helps any. Limited accounts tend to skrew up a lot. They often run into issues running programmes.

Re: Computer Question
Hey Jazzns,
Just wanted to thank you and let you know I got the old computer going. Thanks
quote:
del c:\windows\himem.sys
cp a:\himem.sys c:\windows\himem.sys
With these commands I was able to copy a new himem.sys from the floppy.
With it working now maybe I can wean her off of that computer before it goes again. I've got a Compaq with Win 98 I'm hoping she will use. I at least have a restore disk for it.
Thanks gain for your help.

Re: After only 6 months from new?
I fiddled around the zone where you thought the problem lay in.
I deleted two existing user accounts leaving my own admin one
I turned on the guest account
I made a new account under limited status
I made a new account giving it admin status
I logged onto all accounts then logged off one by one (except my admin). The new limited and admin accounts logged off okay but the guest account gave the same old grey window up (the Norton-associated: Ending programme "ccAPP..." entitled window) but logged of reasonably quickly..
I rebooted, logged into all then logged off one by one and this time they all logged off straightaway!
Test time. I logged into all - then switched to my original admin account and attempted to shut down from there. And it did - at a decent speed too.
Top marks for the pinpoint Al..asdair - even if I still can't figure out what the hell is going on.

Re: After only 6 months from new?
Iano,
What probably happened is that the Norton Internet Security needs to access something that is limited to administrators as part of it's shutdown process.
You certainly didn't do anything wrong, it's simply an example of very poor software design.
Windows was never a well conceived operating system, which is one of the reasons it is so easy to break. In a real operating system you never run things as administrator unless you have to.
I would agree with Alasdair. You pretty much have to stay as administrator to get most things to work under windows. (or give your account admin rights)

Re: After only 6 months from new?
I get the drift. I'll see how long these new limited accounts last and if it reoccurs will give them admin status
Another question. Is it worthwhile getting a registry cleaner. I went on line and got a demo version from PCtools and gave it a spin. It said that there was 185 errors in my registry, fixed 40 for free then stuck its hand out for money.
Are they worth the effort?

Thanks Asgara
I tried out ccleaner and it worked a treat. A zillion registry issues dumped. Nothing too major it seemed. And a zillion useless files deleted too. Great stuff Asgara. Thanks aga.. *CRASH*
