In an (IMO) ironic display, the marines have rejected a company's offer to donate 4000 talking Jesus dolls that quotes bibles verses. I do agree with the reasoning behind it (the gifts are based on economic need, and might be given to a child that is not Christian, and the Marine corp, as a branch of the government can not promote one religion over another).
Error
However, it is ironic since the whole drive for Christmas gifts was essentially religious at one point.
Hum. It would be fun to get a hold of one of those, and reprogram it's sayings.

Thing is, it doesn't even sound like a fun toy. I mean, unless you have a somewhat sacriligious bent, what kind of games could one play with Talking Jesus?

Kings were put to death long before 21 January 1793. But regicides of earlier times and their followers were interested in attacking the person, not the principle, of the king. They wanted another king, and that was all. It never occurred to them that the throne could remain empty forever. -- Albert Camus

Too true, Jesus was just too nice a guy. Now if you had a God doll, you could go about smiting this or smiting that, flood the Earth, release plagues or hoards of locusts, have first born sons put to death, all sort of really fun and cool stuff. Now if the Jesus doll could change water into wine then it would really be something!

Heh. That reminds me. About 10-15 years ago, there was a PC game called Deos or something like that. You played against the computer, although I think it was possible to network to another PC and play against another person.
You and your opponent were gods. The object was to wipe out all of your opponent's followers, leaving the world soley to your own. The terrain is rocky or swampy and uneven. You had to build up the terrain or build it down to make it flat and even so your followers could build cities and make more followers. All of this used up power, but having more followers allowed your power to regenerate faster.
Of course, you would try to destroy your opponent's cities by causing earth quakes, making mountains appear. If you had enough power you can flood the entire world (the water level would raise one unit -- hopefully you built up your part of the land to be above the flood).
You could also create knights who would go kill the opponent's followers and burn down his cities. Heh. I liked the victory dance a knight would do after he burned down a city.
Very Old Testament stuff.

Is one of Talking Jesus sayings, "Eli Eli lama sabachthani?"

That could be why the company had 4000 to give away. They probably couldn't sell them, so were looking for a tax deduction on the gift.

Just say no to McCain 2008; he abandoned principle when he caved on habeus corpus

Stargate SG1 is using this very concept for their seasons 8, 9, and 10.
Anyway, sounds like a fun game. I think I'll look into it.

What you describe sounds just like Populous (Populous - Wikipedia) from Bullfrog games. Perhaps it was called something different over your side of the pond? It was designed by Peter Molyneux - who later went on to do Black and White.
This person is apparently doing an open source implementation. Don't know if its any good.

It certainly looks the same; maybe I just misremembered the name.
The oddest thing happened once when I was playing that game. I was pretty much stomping the computer. I made several knights, and then let them run amok while I just concentrated on developing my side. Then I realized that I hadn't seen any of the opponent's people running around, so I decided to scroll aroung the world to see what was going on. I just found burned out ruins -- lots and lots of burned out ruins. I experienced such an eerie feeling....

Get it to debate your clockwork Mohammed, of course.
Hours of fun for all the family.

A computer game already exists that lets you smite a whole heck of a lot.

I notice that the thing is blue-eyed, despite Jesus being Jewish; and has long hair, despite what St Paul had to say about that.
At the second coming, no-one will recognise him, you realise? "Jesus? You're not Jesus. I know Jesus by sight and he's an Aryan hippy, now piss off."
It reminds me of this story. Carl Kirby, creationist idiot, but I repeat myself, complaining that children can't recognize Jesus. He showed them pictures of Jesus, y'see, and ...
Ah, creationists.

Impressively OT. Sorry.
Nasty. Its good when a game can make you feel something like that.
I got similar glimpses into the vortex while playing a little something called "Exile" on the BBC B.
Alone... so alone...
Ah, those were the days...
