Re: Phelps does Christianity WRONG!
For anything but the ghf site I get a trace response of "unknown host". For gsf I get the same kind of trace result for any other site I have no problems reaching.

Re: Phelps does Christianity WRONG!
Okay. Then his sites have likely been removed from your DNS server. To reach them you'd need to use a different DNS server.
At a command prompt type ipconfig /all and see who your DNS servers are?

Re: A Beer or three
Thanks for the chuckle, Phat. Seriously, tho', I agree with Pecos. This topic to feels like something that really can't be explored in an Internet forum. It's opinion, and speculation, and feelings, and it needs face-to-face feedback and body language to assist in conveying meaning. The beer is merely to lubricate the synapses.

Re: Phelps does Christianity WRONG!
I'm running unix and it says that I need to enter a command which I assume would be getifaddr, but then I am supposed to enter something else, an "interface name".
Is it normal for a DNS server to not have all sites? When you say they have likely been removed would that be an webhost issue?

Censorship ?
Why would they have been removed from a DNS server? And if they are removing offensive sites from their servers why leave GHF?
Oh well so much for free speech — no matter how offensive or harmless.

In the Netherlands it is now against the law to use images of political leaders in social satire.
They officially banned a really cool poster of the PM photoshopped into a porn image that mocked his stance on norms and values, as well as an advertising flier for a chain of stores which allow for cheaper prices which used the same PM's image suggesting that he shopped there to cut costs (mocking his tightwad budget cutting measures).
It is surprising that if this was a censorship issue they would block hate nation sites and not hate gays sites, but maybe that just goes to show what the Netherlands really stands for (these days).

The root DNS servers have all sites. Below them there is a hierarchy of DNS servers which cache records for fairly short periods. The hierarchy terminates at the DNS server(s) that your ISP provides. Any server in that hierarchy can refuse to provide records, although the root ones never do AFAIK.
You might be able to run your own local DNS server; I've done that when my ISP's server was being flaky. Most can be set to go directly to the root servers, if they don't already. See, for example, Top: Computers: Software: Internet: Servers: Address Management; MaraDNS might be interesting. However, your ISP or someone above you in the chain might be blocking requests to those IPs and ports.

Re: Phelps does Christianity WRONG!
try a simple nslookup. It will tell you what DNS server you're using.

Re: Phelps does Christianity WRONG!
Actually, the root servers usually simply have lists of authoritative servers and not all the actual addresses IIRC.
One thing holmes could do is try an nslookup on GHF and then point his dns to the dns server for GHF. It appears that america, sweden and canada are all on the same server which is 65.16.52.66 so he's using virtual domains for them. Fags is on 64.246.41.6. He is using 65.15.52.68 ns1.speakfree.net as his nameserver and is using two additional servers as name servers for fags.
Bunch of servers and lots of duplication there. Not just some backroom home setup.

Re: Phelps does Christianity WRONG!
I have to say, after everything you said about your television setup I had no clue you were so computer savvy. I am definitely feeling like an idiot.
I ran the nslookup and have one dns number. How do I move it or point it toward the phelps sites?
Yes, I am this computer illiterate. I had no idea how bad I was till now (well at least on these type issues).

You know what, I'll take it over from here. This is obviously my problem and I am being very lazy and asking for each step of the way to be handed to me... though I haven't asked for the silver platter yet.
I've got a start thanks to you (and I'll check the stuff the other poster suggested). If I still have a problem I will open up a short subject thread so as not to further derail this thread into Godhatesholmes'slackofcomputerskills.

No problems. Feel free to ask anything, I may well lack answers but can likely point you in the right direction.
And as an aside, I'm surprised you were surprised.
