Just out of curiosity, do you eat meat? I mean, I'm wondering if you make the same distinction between a warm-and-fuzzy animal and a tasty one as you make between a baby and a fetus.

LudoRephaim writes: I make no distintcions between babies and "fetuses". And the way you are using it, it's not a good analogy, since humans are not on dah menu I didn't mean it as an analogy - I was just wondering if you saw a similarity. Clearly, you don't. I agree with you on meat-eating and I agree with Mod on abortion. I don't "support" abortion, but I support a woman's right to make her own choice. Similarly, I don't support eating vanilla ice cream, but I support a person's right to make that choice. Help scientific research in your spare time. No cost. No obligation. LudoRephaim writes: You dont like Vanilla Ice Cream Ringo? I'm just saying it isn't my first choice - just like it isn't your first choice. Neither is abortion my first choice. But I don't tell other people what ice cream to choose and I don't tell other people what other options to choose. Help scientific research in your spare time. No cost. No obligation. LudoRephaim writes: I also have high regard for fetuses/varmints/babies outside the womb and some kids as well. In case you missed my point completely, I was expressing my dismay at your low regard for the human race in general. One might think that you should be pro-abortion if you're so concerned about the little guys growing up to be terrorists and TV-show-cancellers. But it seems typical of "pro-lifers" that they have an ill-concealed contempt for humanity.
I've never heared a fetus promoting the metric system or killing out the California Texas and other Grizzlies of the lower states This is getting more and more bizarre. You're comparing the metric system with causing extinctions? Are you aware that nearly the whole world uses the metric system? Help scientific research in your spare time. No cost. No obligation. Michael Moore did something similar in his recent book "Dude! where's my country" where he listed the great accomplishments and inventions of the french people, and then added "The Etch-a-sketch" as the pinnacle of them. In the Political Compass thread, Buzsaw writes:
Did you notice the plural "others"? The Golden Rule requires taking the woman into consideration as well as the fetus. If you don't want to be forced to be pregnant for nine months, don't force her.
Regarding Abortion, I go with the Golden Rule of doing to others as I would have them do to me. In another post in the same thread, Buzsaw writes:
What about the cases where she is forced? In most cases nobody is force into having sex. "I'm Rory Bellows, I tell you! And I got a lot of corroborating evidence... over here... by the throttle!"

The problem of exemptions is that they undermine your whole idea of "personhood". Is the fetus that was conceived out of rape less of a person? The place to start is with those of mutual consent. The legality of exemption for others could be on a case by case basis. "I'm Rory Bellows, I tell you! And I got a lot of corroborating evidence... over here... by the throttle!"

Why is the fetus less of a person if the woman's life is in danger? Since when can you choose between two persons by killing one of them? If I had my druthers, the only exemptions would be if the physical life of the mother was in danger. "I'm Rory Bellows, I tell you! And how does soul mathematics work in the case of twins? ... if it's a soul you're destroying, wouldn't the sperm and the egg both be carrying half the soul? "I'm Rory Bellows, I tell you! And I got a lot of corroborating evidence... over here... by the throttle!"

That was the point of my joke with oni about soul math. If a "person" begins when the soul enters, then it's important to know when the soul enters. But you have to put a line somewhere, and since this is a continuum, it is not sufficient to look ''before'' and ''after'' the line, see negligeable differences, and therefore argue the line cannot be put there. Do the sperm and egg cells have half-souls that unite? Or is the soul "implanted" by God at some point in time? If so, when is that point? At conception? In the second trimester? At birth? At circumcision? (In which case, when do girls receive their souls?) At the bar/bat mitzvah? Edited by ringo, : fixed CapitalizatioN. "I'm Rory Bellows, I tell you! Catholic Scientist writes:
This is where the Golden Rule comes in again. It isn't so much how they want the women to feel; it's how they do make the women feel. It's akin to protesting the war by going to soldiers' funerals and calling them baby-killers. It has more to do with venting than with constructive criticism. Do you honestly believe that the main reason for protesting abortion is to make the mother feel like shit because of dislike? "I'm Rory Bellows, I tell you! And I got a lot of corroborating evidence... over here... by the throttle!"

The question I was asking was, "When does the soul enter the body?" Are you saying that that happens at around 100 cells? My personnal view, and I'll have to say it is not very popular with my christian friends, is that the line should be put at around the 100th cell division. Biologically, I can see your point, although an equally valid point could be made that the fetus isn't a separate entity until it can survive outside the womb, which I think is considerably later. However, the point of my question is more theological, since many opponents of abortion talk about it as killing a person, who presumably has a soul. I'm surprised that they don't have a clearer idea of where the soul comes from and when. Edited by ringo, : Changed "but" to "although".
