Is death really punishment?
you know, in my mind, i don't really see death as such a bad thing, certainly not bad enough to constitute a punishment.
i would think tho', that those who believe in hell, or some extreme form of metaphysical retribution, would definitely regard the death of a person who has grieviously sinned as a strong punishment for that person.
if we assume that the death penalty is a form of punishment (and maybe i'm being a bit incendiary here) could it be that the US is pandering to religious ideology by instituting it?

So intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand,
so intimate that when I fall asleep it is your eyes that close.
