car manufacturers aren't willfully evil. for that they'd have to be producing the cars with the spoecific intent and desire to kill people. i assure you. they don't want to kill their consumers. however, they know that the product is inherently dangerous and they market it because people want it. if the people were so worried about their safety, they would have bought a volvo. any car that can survive driving off a fjord is a good car for me..) cars were still mostly luxury items into the mid seventies. it was still a sign of (even moderate) wealth. people still lived mostly in small towns or in cities with buses or had a farm cart. until the mass onslaught of the eyesore suburbs, it wasn't a necessity.
so sure, the manufacturers allow for a certain number of casualties before they are forced to fix something. the military does more and we don't fault them... it took years for them to declare the osprey a deathtrap.
