Re: PC Configuration
From the wiki article
quote:
System requirements for Windows XP Home and Professional editions as follows:[29]
Minimum: Processor 233 MHz Recommended: 300 MHz or higher
Minimum: Memory 64 MB RAM Recommended: 128 MB RAM or higher
Video adapter and monitor Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution
Hard drive disk free space 1.5 GB or higher
Note 1: Using 64 MB of RAM allows the user to complete simple tasks, such as browsing the web or reading email. The user's experience would be "equivalent or superior to that of Windows Me running on the same hardware."
In addition to the Windows XP system requirements, Service Pack 2 requires an additional 1.8 GB of free hard disk space during installation.[31] Service Pack 3 requires an additional 900 MB of free hard disk space during installation.
On a plain reading it would appear that Mikes computer should be up to the task. Supposing that XP ran well at some point and doesn't now - because of registry cleaner issues, then a re-install might be the way to go.
You got discs for a reinstall Mike?

Linux Distro, more friendly than you would think!
Modern Linux distributions like Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS and Mandriva are incredibly userfriendly. I've set my grandparents computer up with Ubuntu and they like it. Ofcourse all they do is surf the interwebs, read PDFs and mail, but still.
They haven't event noticed that they now run Evince instead of Acrobat Reader, OpenOffice instead of MS Office and Evolution instead of Outlook. All they noticed is that they're system just acts faster, and does less complaining.
I would not recommend though Mike, that you install Ubuntu on that box of yours instead of XP. My mother had XP running for years on her 400mhz celeron with 256mb RAM, and it ran smooth. Ubuntu cannot do this. Took me ages to get Ubuntu running on a 1400mhz Centrino, 248mb RAM laptop. And it still runs slow (Had to use Ubuntu on that laptop, company policy)
Ofcourse there are other distro's with a way smaller footprint, but this will be a poor solution, unless you are or know a linux geek.
IF you are the geeky, effective type though, i would recommend Plan 9.

That shouldn't happen. I would check that Compiz is turned off, or if it's turned on that your graphics card can support it.
Like I said before. I've got Xubuntu running on a Pentium-II, 128MB Ram machine a lot faster than XP ever did.
Fluxbuntu would be even faster! And it's quite user-friendly too.

Re: PC Configuration
I haven't got the disc, but apparently I can't reinstall XP because my system used to be FAT.
I think a new tower is my best bet, but untill I "need" the internet, I am not willing to part with the cash.
