There a whole branch of new wave and post rock bands that never seem to have made much of an impact in the US.
The Clash
Gang Of Four
The Stranglers
Joy Division
Cocteau Twins
Talk Talk
New Order
The Stone Roses
Happy Mondays
What about Radiohead - pretty original I'd say?
What about German motorik from the 70' - bands such as Can and Neu! were way ahed of their time.
What about the electronic work of the likes of Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Orbital, Massive Attack and Leftfield?
If anything mainstream music in the US has become very conservative of late. There's a whole host of suff going on the the UK and Europe right now.
If you don't know about these bands that's your problem, not anyone else's!

There hasn't. It seems that you need to broaden your horizons.

I wouldn't begin to say why the US is in the lead, so to speak, in musical brilliance.
Maybe it was "in the lead" forty to fifty years ago, but I don't think it is now. There is great music being made all around the globe.

The reason has an awful lot to do with Africa.
Indeed. Much of the basis of jazz and rock music derived from the beat-driven musical forms of Africa.

For instance, I grew up on Slayer. And though I still like most of their music (albeit the newest album was a complete disappointment), its so anti-christ that I just can't stomach it. Its not even that I feel some sort of duty to not listen to it, some it just sickens me to the core.
Well I have no religious reservations, but I do find their music and "God is evil" message very tired and repetitive.
NJ writes:
Yes, I have listened to them. They are , technical, original and I think they're very talented, but for some reason I can't really get into it that much.
Heh, not many can. The self consciously abstract lyrics and some of the screaming vocals are a weak point, but the driving, polymetric nature of their music inspires me (I'm a bassist and drummer). It's like Kraftwerk on a rampage!
I'm not a metalhead, but I am a bit of a muso. I have long been in the habit of picking up on the most extreme examples of any given genre.
