Im guessing because they were always conservative and the democrats took a liberal shift.
If you are conservative then you are for business as usual. Since the War for Independence was most assuredly not for "business as usual" you were against the War for Independence if you were a conservative.

What gives you the impression that I could not be a conservative? I would be amazed if you could read so much from so little.
What makes you think a conservative would have been "for" the War for Independence?
Perhaps your confused about the label "conservative" or "liberal"?
Since I framed my answer in response to your statement that there were several conservatives in favor of the War for Independence, let's stick to that for now.
