Percy responds to me:

I wanted to switch back to IE 7.0, but when I did ctrl-F was still broken. I use ctrl-F all the time, so I had to switch. I don't think it's possible to tell where exactly the problem lies. It could be XP, it could IE 8.0, it could be IE 7.0, it could be rollback software, I don't know.
It sounds like you ran into a variant of an issue with the beta of IE and XP: Depending upon how you installed various things, you won't be able to go back.
What is currently known, and Microsoft has warned against, is that if you installed Beta 1 of IE on XP, then upgraded to Service Pack 3 of XP, and then installed Beta 2 on top of Beta 1, in that order, then you won't be able to uninstall. Instead, you'll need to uninstall SP3, uninstall B1, reinstall SP3, and then install B2 if you want to be able to uninstall B2. You may be witnessing something similar.
But, that's to be expected in a beta. It isn't finished.

Thank you for your submission to Science. Your paper was reviewed by a jury of seventh graders so that they could look for balance and to allow them to make up their own minds. We are sorry to say that they found your paper "bogus," specifically describing the section on the laboratory work "boring." We regret that we will be unable to publish your work at this time.

Why even put it on the market?
The REAL WORLD really is the best laboratory for just about anything and everything.
I used to like to use the newest stuff out there. Then one day I sat back and realized just how much time (we're talking about hours upon hours at a time) I'd spent trying to make a new software work right. In other words, you suckers can continue wasting your time testing out new softwares without getting paid if you want. If they want me to use their beta versions, I want cash up front.
