I couldn't find anything to back up his version. However if you look for plastic keys rather than gold ones you can find loads of references such as this one from
The New Republic.
Although I could can find lots of reports I can't find anything to actually verify the story that 'human waves' of children were used to clear minefields - there are references to an unamed 'East European reporter' who saw it but that's about it.
