Welcome to EVC. I alternate between being an active participant and a lurker. I had the same astonishing revelation (that evolution was a very reasonable--in fact, the only reasonable--interpretation of the evidence at hand) a couple years before you did.
How much flak did you get? I got a lot, some of it very vitriolic (I hope I know what that word means), and I still get some occasionally, even from dear friends. I live in a Christian community that "officially" holds to a belief in evolution, though we still have a few holdouts who love to send comments my way, hoping that we'll end up being wrong. (They're friends, that sort of flak isn't bad.)

Shoot, I just saw you're from Sanford, Fl. While I'm not from there, our community is from there. We were in Geneva through the early 90's, though very, very small at the beginning. Seventeen families moved from there to Tennessee during 1996, which is where I joined.

It's sad that after six thousand years of civilization and human know-how society still doesn't consider religious indoctrination a form of child abuse.
Bit of an oxymoron, here, my friend. Was this meant to be a joke? Pretty witty one, if so. If not, you should know that the time is 8,000 years unless you're adopting the Christian fundamentalist timeline that you're complaining about.
Child abuse is a term thrown around way too easily nowadays. If religious indoctrination is child abuse, then 90% of children are abused, because at least that many children receive marred world views from their parents.
I know, because I'm in the 10% that knows the right world view.

I am very curious about your Christian community experience. From Sanford to TN? Are you comfortable telling me a little about it?
I'd love to tell you about it, but I can't derail this thread going into it. Feel free to read all you want at Error 404 (Not Found)!!1. I think you can email us from just about any page of the web site, and most of the web site emails get forwarded to me to answer.

What civilization do we know of that existed 8k years ago?
I believe Sumeria's considered the first civilization. It dates back 8,000 years. That's when farming started. Farming produced the first cities. There were wandering tribes and religious worship for thousands of years before that, though how many thousands is much discussed. Asians first came to America about 13,000 years ago (or more if you listen to some people), and they were tribal and religious. Obviously, they had to have been in Asia before that.
Well, a more obvious example of this particular form of child abuse is the case with Lamb and Lynx Gaede.
Yes, but isn't hate the problem there, and not religion?
Their situation is awful.
