Depends on what kind of games you like. If you're more into constant-action-style or puzzle games, I'd go with a Gamecube. If you like RPGs (which is probably the case if you stick with a PC) then I'd go for a Playstation 2.
I've got it pretty sweet... I've got a PS2, my roommate has a Gamecube. So whichever you choose, let me know. I'll throw down a list of reccomended games.

The crippled psalms of an age that won't thaw are ringing in my ears"

Depends. If you haven't played much videogames before, and aren't really sure what types of games you'd enjoy, I'd go with the Gamecube. It's much cheaper, and has a variety of games which are easy to learn but a lot of pure fun to play. You can also play most games in multiplayer.
I'd only go with the PS2 if there is a specific type of games you like, or a specific game serie, that the GC doesn't have (like the Final Fantasy games (RPGs), or the Silent Hill games (horror)).

FF: Crystal Chronicles is on Gamecube. And it's freakin' great.

Yeah, but it's completely different from the other FF games. More like Secret of Mana. Action-RPG multiplayer.
Is it worth purchasing if you aren't sure you can gather enough friends with GBAs to play multi? Is the single player part worth it, or is it based too much upon playing with friends?

I bought an Xbox after getting frustrated enough with having to patch every single PC game I bought and constantly facing having to do several hundred dollars worth of upgrading every couple of months just to keep up.
There are some pretty good first person shooters for it like Halo (though I did not think it was as good as the hype).
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic and Morrowind are both excellent RPGs on the Xbox (though both are out for PC as well). Deus Ex Invisible War was pretty good...especially the no matter what you do, you end up screwing somebody over aspect of it that always made you think twice about how you approach a situation.
I plan on picking up Thief III if they ever patch the AI bug that has been reported...they fixed it for the PC but not the Xbox.
There are also a bunch of pretty funny racing games.
All in all, it is really like playing on a PC but with a lot less hassle and need to upgrade every month.

Try Freedom Force for PC...nothing like the super hero The Patriot shouting "For Freedom" before he gets scared by a giant ant and then knocked out by an enraged amazon woman. There was also a nice program bug that let your superhero The Ant burrow underground and get stuck there...it is really effective in a fight when a quarter of you team is running around in another dimension while your team is getting pulped trying to save a school from dinsaurs.

More like Secret of Mana.
I'd compare it more to Diablo, but I see your point.
Is the single player part worth it
In my opinion, yes. It's much harder in one-player, but still a great game.

Is that the one where the graphics are all done up to look like Kirby drawings?

Yeah..it's set in the 50's, really campy, and despite some bugs, a lot of fun. The cut scenes in between are done like a comic book and the characters are all really over the top.
You can even create your own characters and give them whatever powers you want to do skirmishes against others online...I thought of Nganjuk-Man...resistent to logic, able to repeat himself in a single sentence, with the tragic flaw of being unable to read. I figure you could pair him up with alymeda-Man and let them knock a city down with their heads.

Awh, guess I'll have to add another game to my must buy list, then.
What with Tales of Symphonia (WOW, a non-port GC RPG) and Star Ocean 3 coming out very soon, and both getting very high reviews...
Curse thee, European countries. I'll be broke just from the shipping costs of all the games I import.

Just to back up Mammuthus, the XBOX kicks ass. I was watching a geeky video game show on tv and this celebrity piped up "The XBOX is the console that was meant to have beer spilled on it." If you are looking for an adult oriented game system, XBOX is the stuff.
In addition to the games Mammuthus mentioned, also try Ninja Gaiden (THE best hack n slash game ever), Panzer Dragoon Orta, Splinter Cell (haven't tried the second one yet), and quite a few others. Of course, you won't be able to get any of the Final Fantasy series, but Sudeki comes out in a few weeks, and Fable (rpg) comes out within the next 6 months.
The XBOX has better graphics and more of the games support HDTV if you have it. I have won over quite a few PS2 owners over the years, given that they can get all of the same sports games with better graphics. Consoles are the way to go right now instead of PC games, unless RTS and other PC style games are more your style. The games are the same price, they are guaranteed to work on your system, and they look great. No real way to lose.

I'm all over the Cube but the PS2 has better selection.
I dunno, there's pretty much no way to decide. GC has some of the best games of the last 2 years, like Zelda or Metroid Prime. I already had a GBA when I got mine so it's really more of an accessory, a way to play Game Boy games on the tv.
On the other hand, there's a buttload of games for the PS2. But the graphics are the worst of the big three systems.
I'd let the games be your guide. Which games do you want to play?
AbE: One more thing. The GC has four controllor ports to the PS2's two. That's really important for multiplayer. If you play with friends a lot, get a GC.

You guys need to play City of Heroes. It's a lot like Freedom Force only take away everything that sucks about FF.
Well, that doesn't leave much, I guess. Of course, as a MMORPG it has it's own set of problems - other people - but it's hella fun, if I haven't made that clear already.
