Creepy
I'm confused by this. The program just runs a bunch of calculations, it does less creepy things than playing a computer game (a program that tries to immerse you psychologically in another world, the rules of which are decided by geeks).
My email program 'learns' what I consider spam and what I want to read. It gets to decide what I read and when. THAT'S creepy.
I always turn the computer off when I am not using it, the idea of letting it be on the net full time is creepy.

That's fine. You don't have to leave it on the net full time. I may just be that you and others don't understand how the grid works.
The application downloads a program to your computer. Your computer then works the problem. Once completed it contacts the grid, uploads the results and downloads the next project to work on.
In Preferences you can set when it can work on problems (although it only uses unused resources at anytime) as well as connection times.

Re: Creepy
If you don't have it secured enough to allow net access when you aren't sitting at the keyboard then you aren't any safer when you are. At least in my non-security-expert opinion.

World Community Grid
World Community Grid - About
Our Mission, Our Work and You
World Community Grid's mission is to create the world's largest public computing grid to tackle projects that benefit humanity.
Our work has developed the technical infrastructure that serves as the grid's foundation for scientific research. Our success depends upon individuals collectively contributing their unused computer time to change the world for the better.
World Community Grid is making technology available only to public and not-for-profit organizations to use in humanitarian research that might otherwise not be completed due to the high cost of the computer infrastructure required in the absence of a public grid. As part of our commitment to advancing human welfare, all results will be in the public domain and made public to the global research community.

How Grid Technology Works
Making a difference has never been easier! Grid technology is simple and safe to use. To start, you download and install a small program or "agent" onto your computer.
When idle, your computer will request data on a specific project from World Community Grid's server. It will then perform computations on this data, send the results back to the server, and ask the server for a new piece of work. Each computation that your computer performs provides scientists with critical information that accelerates the pace of research!

Question for Coragyps
cora, I see where you joined the grid, but you aren't a member of Team EvC. Was this an oversite or don't you love us anymore?

Re: There's a noticable lack of Christians on the Team
So did we get many christians to join the team? Seems to be a sorry commentary on the religion that we have so few.
Any Iders or YEC's at all?
