"I believe God is managing affairs and that He doesn't need any advice from me. With God in charge, I believe everything will work out for the best in the end. So what is there to worry about."
Henry Ford
"The true test of character is not how much we know how to do, but how we behave when we don't know what to do."
John Holt
"Whatever is to make us better and happy, God has placed either openly before us or close to us."
Lucius Annaeus Seneca
"You become a champion by fighting one more round. When things are tough, you fight one more round."
James Corbett
"Be strong and of good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." Joshua 1:9
The Bible
"It is always right that a man should be able to render a reason for the faith that is within him"
Sydney Smith
There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman; some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me: only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable... I simply am not there.
-pat bateman
I have all the characteristics of a human being: blood, flesh, skin, hair; but not a single, clear, identifiable emotion, except for greed and disgust. Something horrible is happening inside of me and I don't know why. My nightly bloodlust has overflown into my days. I feel lethal, on the verge of frenzy. I think my mask of sanity is about to slip.

I felt like putting a bullet between the eyes of every Panda that wouldn't screw to save its species. I wanted to open the dump valves on oil tankers and smother all the French beaches I'd never see. I wanted to breathe smoke.

One that I would modify only slightly:
quote:
"It is absolutely safe to say that if you meet somebody who claims not to believe in evolution, that person is ignorant, stupid or insane (or wicked, but I'd rather not consider that)."
From Ignorance Is No Crime, By Richard Dawkins
I would exchange "deluded" for "insane" ...
Enjoy.

Sir Winston Churchill
We've done this before here, but I don't mind doing it again since it's been so long.
Aside from Shakespeare, a lot of my favorite quotes come from Churchill. Here are a few I cited in the earlier thread:
If Hitler invaded hell I would make at least a favourable reference to the devil in the House of Commons.
The English never draw a line without blurring it.
A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject.
The Americans will always do the right thing... after they've exhausted all the alternatives.
To the House of Commons:
I am not invested with dictatorial powers. If I were, I should be quite ready to dictate.
Viscountess Nancy Astor, wife of Waldorf Astor and first woman ever to serve in the British House of Commons, was a major nemesis of Churchill, and she was no slouch when it came to zingers. But Churchill usually got the better of her. One quote I can't find directly (it's in a very big book I have stashed away somewhere, not sure where) so I might get the precise wording wrong has her, saying to an obviously drunk Churchill, "Winston, you're drunk!", to which Churchill replied "Yes, madame, and you're ugly. The difference is that when I wake up tomorrow I'll be sober."
Her famous last words: "Am I dying or is this my birthday?"

W.W.E.D.?

Here is two by Robert Heinlein
quote:
One man's religion is another man's belly laugh.
quote:
The most ridiculous concept ever perpetrated by H.Sapiens is that the Lord God of Creation, Shaper and Ruler of the Universes, wants the sacharrine adoration of his creations, that he can be persuaded by their prayers, and becomes petulant if he does not recieve this flattery. Yet this ridiculous notion, without one real shred of evidence to bolster it, has gone on to found one of the oldest, largest and least productive industries in history.

Look to this day, For yesterday is already a dream. And tomorrow only a vision. But today We lived, makes every Yesterday a dream of Happiness and every tomorrow A vision of hope. Look well there to This day.

I believe this is from someone on this site :
"The problem with the unobservable and the undetectable is that they are indistinguishable from the non-existent."
Sheperd Book, from Firefly (TV series) :
"Governments are groups of people, usually notably ungoverned."
Someone :
"Lazy is a word we use when someone isn't doing what we want them to do."
My favourite Churchill quote, although for the wrong reasons (1919):
"I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes. The moral effect should be so good that the loss of life should be reduced to a minimum. It is not necessary to use only the most deadly gasses: gasses can be used which cause great inconvenience and would spread a lively terror and yet would leave no serious permanent effects on most of those affected."
(italics mine)

I'd like to share a revelation that I’ve had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species, and I realised that humans are not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment; but you humans do not. Instead you multiply, and multiply, until every resource is consumed. The only way for you to survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern... a virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer on this planet, you are a plague, and we... are the cure.

"What is "real"? How do you define "real"?"
"If real is what you can feel, smell, taste and see, then 'real' is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain."
"There is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path."

"The U.S. invasion of Iraq is like Muhammad Ali picking a fight with me. It's an unfair fight. However, if I were to have a hand grenade in my hand, he'd think twice before he comes near me, and that is why so-called rogue regimes always seem to want to obtain nuclear weapons." -- Some guy I talked to a couple years back... may not be exact words.

Feel free to quote me:
"The U.S. invasion of Iraq ...
... in order to fight terrorism is like going quail hunting and shooting the guy walking next to you.

Most of my favorites are by Richard Feynman for some reason.
An example:
"The first principle is that you must not fool yourself - and you are the easiest person to fool."
