It's a great place. Tends to blow everyone's caricature of Mississippi right out of the water. Just stay within 5 miles of the coast if you visit. Please.
You're almost right. Some of the towns along the MS River are also worth seeing like Vicksburg (my hometown) and Natchez. Both are beautiful small cities with lots of history, vibrant historic downtown districts and fascinating historic homes. Coastal and river cities in Mississippi are not quite so insular and politically reactionary as other regions of this state. Extreme northeast MS is also worth a visit for its breathtaking natural beauty. The stretch of Natchez Trace that runs from Tupelo to Nashville is probably the most beautiful road I've ever driven, save only mountain parkways like the Blue Ridge in the Smokies.
Speaking of roads, the bay bridge you mentioned is part of U.S. Highway 90. The stretch that runs along the beach from Biloxi to Bay St. Louis is one of the nicest city highways I know of.
