Do ministers, pastors, priests, etc., have to obtain state licenses before they can perform legally recognized marriages? My wife's pastor (from Wisconsin) had to get a form from the county in which we were married in order to officiate the ceremony. I imagine he had to submit some evidence that he was an ordained Methodist minister, but I don't know what. Our Minnesota marriage liscense wasn't official until it had been officiated and witnessed. So our pastor was very much imbued by the government with the ability to officiate a wedding.

I know this is off topic. But Crash ... Where you married before you where atheist? Or was it just she and her family that wanted it?
My wife and I couldn't have a religious wedding even though that’s what our families wanted.. This message has been edited by DC85, 05-18-2004 09:12 AM My site The Atheist Bible My New Debate Fourms!

It does seem that the verse in kjv deuteronomy 32:31 is quite evident in Canada, where likely heavy fines for saying something negative against this particular abomination, kinda interesting how it says some of these people are judges, perhaps its an attack on the churches right to preach of this particular abomination, and the bible does say their Rock is not the rock but are our enemies, and if they attack the freedom to preach this is an abomination, then they are attacking the right of free speech, I kinda see it as let the filthy be filthy still, kjv revelation 22:11, for the time is at hand kjv revelation 22:10, so I don't hate these people, if they want to be filthy still kjv Revelation 22:10 but they shouldn't get offended by those people that want to be righteous still, because the time is at hand, etc...
P.S. These few liberal judges have overstepped their bounds pitting their interpretations against the constitution forcing congress to address the issure of the sanctity of institution of marriage, for the childrens sake, and the protection of those that chose to live righteous, Holy lives, etc... kjv revelation 22:10, hopefully congress will protect the peoples right to freedom of expression[from these immoral judges], but likely the reason for legalizing unfruitful same sex marriage's [no offspring], to pit new laws that conflict with the second amendment, to further erode the constitution, where a few judges are trying to redefine marriage and attacking the peoples constitutional right to the freedom of religious expression, freedom of speech, etc...we all know its a filthy lifestyle, but if they want to be filthy let them be filthy still, but they shouldn't be allowed to teach junior its not filthy, nor should someone be fined as in canada for saying its a filthy lifestyle, but if they are filthy let them be filthy still, so that they that are righteous can be righteous still, holy still, etc... kjv Deuteronomy 32:31 For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges. kjv Revelation 22:11 He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.

Where you married before you where atheist? Or was it just she and her family that wanted it? I'm a strong believer that marriage isn't just a personal covenant, it's a social one. So largely the tenor of our wedding - officiated by a pastor in our college's chapel - was because we knew that stuff was important to our families. If it had been just us we were worrying about we would have gone to a justice of the peace and have done with it, or for that matter, we might not have even bothered in the first place. But I had no objection to a religious ceremony, because the wedding isn't just a party for her and I - it's a social obligation. In return, we get social approval of our unity. And it wasn't like the Methodists are anything but low-key Protestants, anyway. There wasn't much religious stuff that I had to do.

Every country is different, and US law varies by state. Here's a good page where you can get the actual wording of the law for religious weddings. They don't address justices of the peace or any other authorized officials, unfortunately.
US law, by state: http://www.universalministries.com/genmarlaws.cfm International law, by country: http://www.universalministries.com/genmarlaws2.cfm For example, in Mississippi, where I currently reside:"Any ordained minister of the gospel who is in good standing with his or her church may perform marriages. Ministers must send a certificate of marriage to the clerk who issued the marriage license within three months after the marriage. For questions see the clerk of the circuit court."

we all know its a filthy lifestyle Don't speak for us all, whatever. I, for one, don't know anything of the kind. "As the days go by, we face the increasing inevitability that we are alone in a godless, uninhabited, hostile and meaningless universe. Still, you've got to laugh, haven't you?" -Holly

P.S. These few liberal judges have overstepped their bounds someone must take a stand against unjust laws..
unfruitful same sex marriage's [no offspring],
are many straight couples who cannot have children...
to further erode the constitution Bush seems like he is doing a good job of this
where a few judges are trying to redefine marriage and attacking the peoples constitutional right to the freedom of religious expression, freedom of speech, etc...
WOW! so the only expression that counts are the opinions of you immoral christens?(I can do it to).
we all know its a filthy lifestyle I don't know it is... I guess I missed something... I see it not as a life style but a natural thing.
but if they are filthy let them be filthy Ok so why do you care if they get married.. whose sin is it?
He that is unjust, let him be unjust still
this I must admit is the only part I don't agree with..49 state are unjust! They need to change! I think this topic needs to move to free for all This message has been edited by DC85, 05-19-2004 02:10 PM My site The Atheist Bible My New Debate Fourms!

Woohoo, Zephyr! Those are/were the same folks that I was ordained by back in 1968! It cost a whole 6-cent postage stamp back then.....
And I registered with the county clerk, but no one ever asked me to officiate at their wedding. Sniff. Sob.

Wow, I didn't realize they'd been around that long. I came pretty close to getting tapped recently (it's only been about a year for me) but it kinda fell through. I'm maintaining hope that some day I'll put it to use

Ok so why do you care if they get married.. whose sin is it? i kinda care about the children, so they don't pursue the abominable promiscuous lifestyle or the abominable homosexual unions, thats responsible in part to the spreading of them std's. the union of one man and one woman is the only way to stop the spread of these std's, the way to spread std's is promiscous sex, which is sin, and likely the reason for the std's, is because god is not pleased, etc... thought it was one of those abomination sins, like people have a free will, so if you chose to be filthy still, to allow you to be filthy still, so its probably a sin against your body, BUT PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE MANDATORY SEXUAL DISEASE TESTING FOR EVERY AMERICAN, SO IF SOMEONE INFECTS SOMEONE ELSE, ITS DOCUMENTED SO THEY COULD BE TRIED FOR ASSAULT, ITS PROBABLY TIME FOR MANADATORY TESTING, AND DOCUMENTATION ON THE DRIVERS LICENCE, OR SOME COMPUTER ONLINE DOCUMENTATION, SO YOU COULD GO ON LINE AND SEE IF SOMEONE IS CLEAN OR UNCLEAN, ETC... I MEAN IF THEY ARE FILTHY LET THEM BE FILTHY, BUT IF KNOWINGLY INFECT SOMEONE, SHOULD THEY NOT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE, FOR ASSAULT, ETC... p.s. its kinda interesting that some of them std's are like the poison of the dragon that these people get infected from by theirpromiscuous lifesyle [not just the homosexual lifestyle], and the cruel venom of asps, etc... interestingly the poison of the komoda dragon is its saliva, is so full of deadly bacteria that it kills, and the venom of asps probably similar to syphillis, IS THIS THE TREASURES SPOKEN OF IN [KJV DEU 32;34]. kjv Deu 32:33 Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.kjv Deu 32:34 Is not this laid up in store with me, and sealed up among MY TREASURES? kjv Deu 32:35 TO ME belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of THEIR CALAMITGY IS AT HAND, and the things THAT SHALL COME UPON THEM make haste.

Congratulations to all the Homosexual couples in Mass. Who got legally married today! Hopefully this is Just the beginning for you! Yah folks, the beginning for you and the end of Heaven's blessings on America. The ruins of Sodom and Gomorah have been found. Someone out in the future will likely dig up ours.

I do agree that it limits right to free speech to limit preaching against it (to me, only in the sense of Voltaire's "I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."). But, since you're also talking about the Massachusetts law, I will address what you say in regards to that.
quote: So go ahead. Preach all you want. Just as long as I don't have to listen - legalizing gay marriage doesn't mean you aren't free to preach against it.
quote: All right, sure, let them be "righteous" - as long as these "righteous" don't force their views of morality upon others.
quote: Really, in no way is your freedom of expression threatened by the expansion of someone else's freedom.
quote: Now I'm really not following... I thought that the second amendment was the right to bear arms?
quote: Marriage in history has had a pretty inconstant definition as it is. In any case, I still fail to see how their right to marriage affects your own freedoms - as long as churches are still allowed to "reserve the right to refuse service".
quote: Really? We all know, or you all think you know? This is what prompted me to reply - the idea of yours that we all feel the same way about it.
quote: This from the protector of freedom of expression?
quote: Exactly (well, not how I would have put it, but still...)! Their life doesn't affect you, so let them be who they are.
