OK, I realise there is already another thread on Katrina, but that one is nearing the 300-post limit, and I believe this deserves some special attention.

Watch it, please. Then do what you can. If you're not American (as I am), spread the word. If you're American, try to lobby with your local senator for a Congress Hearing, because something needs to be done about this. I'm thousands of kms away, but I'm appaled at how this has been handled, physically sick at what has happened. Please do something.

This storm is heading right for my house apparently. So if I don't post for awhile after about Friday night, you'll know what happened.

Thanks, Parasomnium. At the moment the estimate is that my neighborhood will receive 100 mph winds (I don't what that is in kilometers). I think the house can withstand that. It's just a row house, nothing special, but I think so.
Possible flooding has got me mighty worried, however.

At the moment the estimate is that my neighborhood will receive 100 mph winds (I don't what that is in kilometers). It's a tiny bit over 160kmh-1 - about 87knots or 44 metres per second. Not good news, but not terrible news, its about a mid strength category two...generally speaking flooding isn't a major issue with storms of this strength, but I'm not sure of the specifics of Rita and your area. Not good news, but not terrible news, its about a mid strength category two So you figure your basic wood house can withstand that?

One big thing to remember is if we do get a Cat 4 or Cat 5 hit on the Texas Coast it's very likely that both Armadillo Power&Light and Ground Squirrel Electric will be affected. There's a good chance that parts of the coast and the Rio Grande Valley could be without power for several weeks.
Folks in Texas need to factor this into their plans. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Generally, yes it'll be fine...there may be some damage from flying debris: broken windows, perhaps the doors and roofing damage...but I doubt its going to get catastrophic damage unless you are really unlucky.

Yes, thanks, that's what I figured. So we are not leaving.
We've lived here 20 years and have never had water in our house. The streets flood, but I don't care about that. If the storm moves through fairly quickly, it should not flood in my neighborhood. We received 9 inches one night, and it did not flood. Almost, but not quite. It's not about how much it rains but how quickly. The sewers can only handle so much per hour. I've been looking for sand bags, but can't find any.

no. the red cross only dedicates a certain ammount to each disaster. just because you donate to the "katrina fund" means nothing. they reach a point and then they move funds to the general disaster relief.
if you want to help anyone, then by all means. if you want to help new orleans, buy zatarains.

Presumably it will weaken.

Is that an urban legend or do you have an official source on that? Inquiring minds want to know, Red Cross' stance is
