Author | Topic: who really owns "Chronicles of Narnia?" | |||||||||||||||||||||||

While Xian symbolism may be within the Chronicles of Narnia, it is not like reading it will convince one that Xianity is real or right. In fact as a kid, and growing up with some Xian exposure, I had not pick up any Xian message, even if certain storylines may have dovetailed and might be more obvious to me today. It was just fantasy.
Now this is where it gets funny for me. Xians are claiming that this is some Xian fantasy, because the author was Xian and making some sort of reuse of Xian stories. Thus Pagans are wrong for adopting those stories, or claiming that Xians are trying to take over a fantasy story? Uhhhhh, the original stories of Jesus... heheheh the original chronicles... were adapted from Pagan fantasy stories at least a century old at the time. So yes, Narnia is ultimately pagan, whatever Lewis intended. And I guess they were good stories because they got picked up by Xians, and then reused still later by a fantasy writer writing fiction for kids. I suppose the big difference between Xians and everyone else is the realization that all of them are fictional characters and stories. The chronicles were written better and so more enjoyable. But no more real than Tolkien. I hope kids watch this movie and start believing they can walk through wardrobes and begin worshipping a Lion that lives in the land behind them. Honestly, it will make the resulting EvC debates even more amusing. It was alright. I thought it moved kinda slow and some of the costumes, for the cretures, looked a bit fake. I don't think there is anything particularly wrong with the film. It's pretty faithfull to the book.
But then again, I just don't think the books were that great to begin with. Result, a not so great movie. Overall, I felt a little cheated out of an afternoon. Wait till it's on video.

Did you come away feeling as if it was a Xian movie, or one instructing you to be Xian?

Not really, but I did find the christian allegory pretty blatant and heavy handed. At a few points I heard the inklings of bad apologetics (the deep magic is the basis for morality and order). Then again, it was easy to just see those aspects as the mythological roots of the story.
I wasn't offended by it, just as I wasn't offended by the greek theology in Clash of the Titans.

Then again, it was easy to just see those aspects as the mythological roots of the story. Yeah, I guess that's what I was going for. If one does not have a clear understanding of Xianity or tenets of that theology, would one walk away thinking they have just learned Xian beliefs, or would it just be like having watched LOTR?
I wasn't offended by it, just as I wasn't offended by the greek theology in Clash of the Titans. That's an interesting point. Do Xians actually avoid movies based on greek or other mythology just because it is not Xian? holmes "...what a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away.."(D. Bros)

Do Xians actually avoid movies based on greek or other mythology just because it is not Xian? The answer for me is I don't avoid movies because of X mythological inuendos, covert or overt. I just like to see a GOOD movie.
Uhhhhh, the original stories of Jesus... heheheh the original chronicles... were adapted from Pagan fantasy stories at least a century old at the time Maybe some facets of pagan fantasy, such as the good vs evil theme, but I'm not familiar with a pagain fantasy where the hero of the story sacrifices himself to open the gates of heaven to all mankind. That being said I agree with you that Narnia is all fiction. Of course it isn't anymore real than Tolkien. I wouldn't expect non-christians to see the movie and suddenly "get it" when it comes to Jesus and christianity. You can watch "The Passion" and get more impact there. I believe the main message of Narnia that C.S. Lewis was trying to convey (to christians), is that average Joe christian is a central and important figure in the battle of the ages between God and Satan. It takes 4 kids and throws them into the battle that they are not only participants of, but makes them aware that the battle is focused on them and that victory is dependant on them. "The Screwtape Letters" has a simliar message. "Damn. I could build a nuclear bomb, given the fissionable material, but I can't tame my computer." (1VB)Jerome - French Rocket Scientist
