Chance as a real force is a myth. It has no basis in reality and no place in scientific inquiry. For science and philosophy to continue to advance in knowledge, chance must be demythologized once and for all. —RC Sproul

Re: Jerry Lewis and others we have known vicariously
As Jerry Lewis passes, I am reminded of two of EvC own who passed and of how though I never met these people I knew of them vicariously through their words--Robin Rohan and Buzzsaw.
With Jerry, of course--the memory endures through his many movies.
With Robin and Buzz, the memory is only found through the words they casually wrote here at EvC. Often as I browse through our archives and come across some of what they wrote, I remember that they are no longer with us.

R.C. Sproul
We have a thread about him currently, and he is revered among Biblical Christians as a good teacher.
Dr.R.C.Sproul dies today
quote:
Sproul was ordained in the Presbyterian Church in America in 1975 and spent his years writing and spreading the Gospel through Ligonier Ministries. Sproul was a devout Calvinist and focused much of his publications on discussing the sovereignty of God, Christian living, intelligent design, and apologetics.
Over his lifetime, He wrote more than 60 books and many articles for evangelical publications. Sproul also served as the editor of the Reformation Study Bible, which has appeared in several editions. In 1978 he also signed the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, which affirmed the traditional view of biblical inerrancy.

Billy Graham
One of the few American Evangelists with integrity who avoided scandel and arguably influenced the largest global audience of them all has passed peacefully at age 99.
America's Pastor' Billy Graham Dies At 99
quote:
...His wife thought he was too loud and too theatrical, but in midcentury America it was a style that worked. As a handsome, blue-eyed young preacher, he projected wholesomeness and charisma. He could command the stage, and his delivery proved perfect for radio and television.(...)Whereas many previous evangelists had embraced a fiery fundamentalism, Graham was more inclusive. In an unusual twist for a Southern Baptist evangelical preacher, Graham coordinated his Madison Square Garden rally with some big New York churches.
"His determination to cooperate with mainline Protestants and with Roman Catholics alienated his fundamentalist friends,"
My Aunt used to adore him. She was a staunch Southern Baptist who was one of the most honest people I ever knew.

Re: I.M.Pei and Murray Gell-Man
I had never heard of him, but upon googling, found that he made some great stuff in his life. He impacted the world in a positive way---what more can we expect from our lives?
quote:
Among physicists, Dr. Gell-Mann could easily be placed on the timeline of the centuries-old effort to find the fundamental laws that governed the behavior of the everyday world and the universe around us.
He was a pioneer in the development of what is called the “standard model” of particle physics, a guide to the fundamental behavior of the constituents of the universe.
The Nobel Prize was awarded to Dr. Gell-Mann 50 years ago, when he was barely 40, suggesting the early recognition of the significance of his contribution to science.

Reflections On Death: May 2019
As I was editing this post(1.61803 beat me to the 9 lives comment) I began to reflect on why we (here at EvC) post obituaries of notable people in the first place.
There are many whom we overlook. Here are several *we* overlooked in May:
Eric Talmadge
Eric Talmadge, who as North Korea bureau chief for The Associated Press tenaciously chronicled life and politics in one of the world's least-understood nations, died last week after having a heart attack while running. He was 57.
Imagine having a heart attack while running to stay in shape! But he accomplished a lot with his life.
Gunther Cunningham
Longtime NFL coach Gunther Cunningham, who emigrated from postwar Germany as a child and then dedicated his life to football, died May 11, 2019, after a brief illness. Cunningham, shown in an October 2000 photo, was 72.
They go on and on. The ones whom we know we post about.
When our own Buzsaw passed, we collectively mourned for someone we knew only through the internet.
The same with our beloved Queen Asgara.
It caused me to reflect this morning. Faith and I are involved in apologetic discussions defending God, eternal life, and infinite eternal purpose, but the fact remains that we too will die someday. And what will our obituary say?
~Reflections.

You always seem to insist on displaying the skeletons in everyone's closet. We all have skeletons. Our legacy is made from the good we have done and not the mistakes we have made.
Kobes premature death was impactful to me because his precious little daughter also died. 200 million dollars cant save anyone when their day of reckoning comes due. When anyone passes, not everyone uniformly loves them nor mourns their passing. Why focus on that, however? RIP Kobe.

Kenny Rogers Dies At 81
NPR writes:
Country music icon Kenny Rogers, whose hits included "Lucille," "Lady" and "The Gambler," died late Friday at his home in Sandy Springs, Ga., his family said in a statement. He was 81.
The Houston-born country star had 20 No.-1 hits and three Grammys and performed for some 60 years before retiring from touring in 2017 at age 79, according to the Associated Press.
Rogers didn't write most of his hits and often said he didn't consider himself much of a songwriter. But he told NPR in 2012 that he had a knack for picking songs that could draw in the listener.
I always liked him.
