CLOUD STILL HANGS OVER ROBERTSON`S MILITARY SERVICE

What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence. -Christopher Hitchens

Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts

"God did it" is not an argument. It is an excuse for intellectual laziness.

If your viewpoint has merits and facts to back it up why would you have to lie?

My 24/7 duty office (I had swing shift) had a TV with cable, so I would sometimes watch CBN for fun -- I had also been a "fellow traveler" of the Jesus Freak movement c. 1970, so I had a background.
When he was running for President a reporter asked him a "gotcha" question of whether a Jew (or any other non-Christian) could be saved and Robertson answered that a Jew could be saved if he obeyed every single part of the Law throughout his life. That mollified the reporters and most hearing that report, but I had eyes to see and ears to hear (ie, I had heard what they actually taught about that). The fundie teaching he used was that obeying every single part of the Law unfailingly was humanly impossible, which is why accepting the Christ was the only practical solution. IOW, he had effectively lied to that reporter. I spoke with a believer at the time and even he was fooled.
Their reactions to modern technology were hilarious. Whenever the topic of computers came up, the screen dripped paranoia. I remember his co-host panicking as he pointed out, "Do you know that they even have computers that can talk!" The TI-99A home computer with a voice attachment made him have to change his shorts? Priceless!
In the following decade, one of his producers wrote an insider exposé: Salvation for Sale. Looking for it at a Crown bookstore, I asked the clerk, "Do you have 'Salvation for Sale'?" He replied, "No, but there's a church a couple blocks down the street."
I was starting to learn about "creation science" at the time I would watch CBN so that was how I first saw creationists in action. Taught me everything I needed to know about them; from my page, Why I Oppose Creation Science (or, How I got to Here from There):
quote:
I first saw creationists in action one night in 1982 on CBN. A Tennessean host would run various debates (I believe it was David Ankerberg {CORRECTION: John Ankerberg}). This particular night, a creationist was debating a scientist -- it was only later that I could put faces to names, but from what I remember of how they looked I think they were Drs. Henry Morris and Frank Awbrey. I remember that the scientist showed several slides of hominid fossils between the same chimpanzee and human bones for comparison, such as knee joints (to show evidence of developing bi-pedalism). Then he showed slides of a human pelvis and chimpanzee pelvis side-by-side. First from the side, then from the top, he pointed out two sets of characteristics that clearly distinguish the one from the other (i.e. whether viewed from the side or from the top, the pelvis could be positively identified as human or chimpanzee). Next he showed both the same views of a hominid pelvis. From one view it was definitely ape, from the other it was definitely human, thus demonstrating it to be a intermediate form. The creationist then proclaimed the hominid pelvis to be 100% ape and not the least bit human by completely ignoring the human characteristic (even when reminded of it repeatedly by his opponent) and concentrating solely on the view that displayed the ape characteristic. Of course, the host declared this to be a creationist victory and threw in the standard creationist gross misrepresentation of punctuated equilibrium for good [?] measure.
This event made a lasting impression on me. The creationist's steadfast ignoring of the blatantly obvious evidence that was repeatedly pointed out to him is a selective blindness that I have found to pervade much of the creationist literature. Now I've begun to suspect that this is but one of many manifestations of the Dark Side of the Farce.
At least we can thank him for his contributions to the growth and spread of atheism through his horrible example (eg, Pat Robertson controversies).

I did not want to honor the unabomber.
For that matter, I did not want to honor Pat Robertson, who also died recently.

Tony Bennett-96
quote:
Tony Bennett, the legendary musician who won 19 Grammys throughout his iconic career, died on Friday in his hometown of New York. He was 96.
His publicist, Sylvia Weiner, confirmed the sad news to The Associated Press this morning. While his cause of death has not yet been confirmed, Bennett was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016. Despite this, he continued to perform and record albums through 2021.
Bennett, who won 19 Grammys, a Lifetime Achievement Award, was a Kennedy Center Honoree and released more than 60 albums over the course of his career, was hailed by industry peer and friend Frank Sinatra as “the best singer in the business.”

Re: Tony Bennett-96
hey Phat - ya beat me to it!
another long page Tony Bennett - Wikipedia
from Wiki:
Bennett died at his home in New York City on July 21, 2023 at the age of 96, following a seven-year battle with Alzheimer's disease. His death was announced by his publicist. In a statement, his family stated that he kept singing to the end and that the last song he ever sang was "Because of You."[161][162][56] Upon his death, Bennett was hailed as the "champion" and "legendary interpreter" of the "Great American Songbook".

Mate, you really need to throttle back a bit. If you want to wind people up you have to be at least slightly believable.
Saying you admire a kiddy-fiddler gives the whole game away that you are just here for the LOLs.

That's sounds funny coming from someone who still has Michael Jackson posters on his bedroom walls.

Cardinal George Pell (1941-2023)
It was a complicated process, but Pell was ultimately acquitted.
