Re: Daniel Dennett
The only one of the horseman that any effect on me is Hitchens and that is solely because of Hitchens’s Razor. “What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.”
Dennett always seemed to me to not get a lot of the science side of things. He was a navel gazing philosopher. Nothing wrong with that, but it certainly limits one’s relevance.
Like Dawkins he became openly supportive of TERF(Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist) ideology. Another time an entitled old white guy decides he should spout on about something he knows nothing about.
Sorry he is dead, but meh. No not sorry. He was old, he was sick. It happens.

What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence. -Christopher Hitchens

Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts

"God did it" is not an argument. It is an excuse for intellectual laziness.

If your viewpoint has merits and facts to back it up, why would you have to lie?

Theo, I don't know which Daniel Dennett you have in mind but I don't think it is this one:

Re: Daniel Dennett
That is him. His understandings and ideas of science, consciousness and darwimism seemed to be way too much philosophical goo and lots of words saying nothing.

Spider John Koerner, 85
May 18th!
John Koerner - Wikipedia
I used to drink with him at the Plough & Stars in Cambridge when he had gigs there.
He had a distinctive sound and was a very nice guy.
He will be missed....

Bill Walton, 71
Well, not a true world great, but a favorite player of mine.
That 1986 season was a lot of fun watching Walton & Bird passing to each other.
But those navicular bones in his feet ended his career.

Re: Bill Walton, 71
xongsmith writes in Message 1299:
Well, not a true world great, but a favorite player of mine.
He was a true great in my book. I followed his college career, then his pro career where he had a falling out with his team (was it Portland?) because he alleged they under-diagnosed his condition and made him play when he shouldn't have.
That 1986 Celtic championship year was something to behold. Robert Parish would guard the paint, then Walton would sub in and start grabbing rebounds and making unbelievable outlet passes. Opponents were under siege no matter which center was in. Bird, Parish, McHale, Johnson and Ainge as starters and Walton as the backup center were a real treat to watch! Rick Carlisle, current coach of the Indiana Pacers that the Celtics just faced in the conference finals, was on that squad, too.
I stopped watching the Celtics around 2012. There was just too much uninspiring basketball. This season I started hearing very positive assessments and started watching toward the end of the season. Hopefully we'll be able to repeat Walton's Grateful Dead quote from after the 1986 championship: "Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile."

The Celtics are playing the NBA finals in jerseys with "Walton" on the shoulder strap.

William Anders - Earthrise
Since my avatar is Earthrise I felt the need to pay homage to William Anders, the Apollo astronaut that took the iconic photos.
