Donald Sutherland died yesterday at age 88. He was one of my favorite actors and had a long career. Movies I liked that he was in:

The Italian Job (and in particular the opening credits) is one of my favorite films but I don't remember Donald Sutherland being in it.

And before Dirty Dozen (1967), we watched him in British TV shows airing in the USA like The Saint and The Avengers. So when I saw Dirty Dozen I recognized him, but not when he played a corpsman in The Bedford Incident (1965) until I rewatched it decades later.
According to Wikipedia, he was Canadian and he moved to the UK in 1957 to study acting. FWIW, I still quote (from memory) his line as Oddjob in Kelly's Heroes where he explains why he modified his tanks with more gears in reverse than forward:

You might be thinking of the original movie, released in 1969, that he wasn't in. He was in the 2003 remake of the same name.

Of course the 1969 one. I didn't even know there was a remake.

I hadn't realized there was a remake of the movie.
Abe: is Stella Mrs. Cosca? I don't remember a Stella from the first version either. Edited by jar, : add stella question

Stella was the Mini Cooper enthusiast. I didn't know there was a remake and never saw it.

Sounds like there is very little in common between the two movies. There was no Stella Mini Cooper enthusiast in the original but probably the most amazing Mini Cooper car chase in the original.
Abe: So I looked up the IMDB summary of the 2003 version and found it is actually a totally different story in plot and feel. In the original there is one death and it happens in the opening credits. There are no shots fired, no shoot outs and even the mafia are more civilized. Edited by jar, : add mini car chase Edited by jar, : see AbE:

I looked the movie up. I didn't know there was an original in 1969 starring Michael Caine. I thought the 2003 movie was the original. In that one Donald Sutherland is killed off very early in the movie, and Charlize Theron playing his daughter Stella is the Mini Cooper enthusiast.

Percy writes: I looked the movie up. I didn't know there was an original in 1969 starring Michael Caine. Bloody hell! The Michael Caine movie is one of the most famous films of all time over here. Played every Christmas and everytime there's a big European football game on. Caine's last word's in it "Hang on a minute, lads. I've got a great idea," are oft quoted. Not as often as
Je suis Charlie. Je suis Ahmed. Je suis Juif. Je suis Parisien. I am Mancunian. I am Brum. I am London. Olen Suomi Soy Barcelona. I am Ukraine. "Science adjusts it's views based on what's observed.

They are two entirely different plots it seems and about the only thing in common is that some real mini's play a starring roll in the original and some ersatz minis show up in the latter.

The good news is, he's not an atheist anymore - after he died he came face-to-face with his Creator. Gee, I wonder how he feels now, knowing that his whole life was based on a fallacy. Edited by Admin, : Hide inappropriate content.
