Orlando Cepeda 86
Cepeda is one of the all-time great Puerto Rican baseball players. He was toward the end of his career by the time I started paying attention to baseball, but I remember being aware of him.

Re: Orlando Cepeda 86
The article doesn't mention him, but Roberto Clemente was another great Puerto Rican baseball star. He and Orlando Cepeda started in the major leagues around the same time. Tragically Clemente was killed in a plane crash on an aid mission in 1972.

John Mayall
Anyone that knows anything about blues or rock should know about John Mayall. He is instrumental in what music is these days. He nurtured and mentored so many musiicians it is impossible to keep track. Without John Mayall we would not have many of the musicians we listen to today.

Re: Orlando Cepeda 86
Roberto Clemente is still widely revered in Puerto Rico.
He is one of those people that I will always remember where I was when I heard he died. In the Puerto Rican culture New Years Eve is a huge celebration. Christmas was too holy a day to have parties so New Years Eve took that place. I was 10 years old in 1972.
Every New Years Eve we would go to my grandparents apartment in NYC. During the evening news started to filter in that Clemente had died. The NYE celebration took on the air of a funeral march.
I have memories of looking out my grandparents bedroom window onto Amsterdam Avenue as people walked by wailing and cryng. Some people shouting the latest news so the neighborhood would know.

Chi Chi Rodriguez
Another loss from the sporting world for the Puerto Rican community. As a kid we always watched for Chi Chi when tournaments were televised. At 5' 7", 130 lbs he was one of the men my father would have been bigger than. Pop was 5'9 and maxed at under 140. Chi Chi was 6 months older than Pop.

Re: Chi Chi Rodriguez
Chi Chi Rodriguez was a very skilful golfer. He could hit any shape shot and accurately. The only thing he lacked was the power to hit it long.

Re: James Earl Jones (January 17, 1931 – September 9, 2024)
My wife and I were just talking about this last night. My first boss became a good friend, attended my wedding, but over the years we lost touch. I periodically try to find him, with no success. His wife's sister, Celia Hart (stage name), was married to James Earl Jones. They'd have dinner with them occasionally, but I never met him myself.
Anyway, I kept thinking I should contact Celia, she would know where they are, but then she died. So then I kept thinking I should contact James Earl Jones, but now he's gone, too.
James Earl Jones, a great actor who if I'd been pushy enough I probably could have met.

Kris Kristofferson, 88
Kris Kristofferson, a singer-songwriter whose trove of country-pop hits such as “Me and Bobby McGee” and “Help Me Make It Through the Night” pushed him to the forefront of American popular composers and whose gritty-voiced, easygoing sex appeal propelled him to starring roles in Hollywood, died Sept. 28 at his home in Maui. He was 88.
I'll never forget him comforting Sinead O'Connor at the Bob Bash.

Re: Kris Kristofferson, 88
I also remember him from his movie roles. The movie 'Convoy' of the late 1970s as well as his role as Abraham Whistler in the Blade Trilogy. RIP.

Re: Kris Kristofferson, 88
I didn't see him in any movies except a little-remembered TV mini-series called Amerika that aired in 1987. He was pretty good, if I recall. Me and Bobby McGee sung by Janis Joplin is one of my favorite songs.

Phil Lesh
Phil Lesh, Bassist Who Anchored the Grateful Dead, Dies at 84 - The New York Times
A source of particular excitement was the relationship between Mr. Lesh’s instrument and Mr. Garcia’s. At times they mirrored each other. At other times they contrasted, in the process widening the music’s melodic nuances while helping to create the kind of variety and tension that allowed the band to improvise at length without losing the listener.
