How do I open a command prompt window?
I did finally understand that you meant the modem AT&T sent. It says Speedstream 4100.

I got the info but I'm not sure why it's needed. Please explain.
Thanks Dr. Jones. Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

I asked for that to help identify the modem. You can skip it for now.
It says Speedstream 4100.
Okay. That was my guess. You will probably need the modem access code for the next step. It is on a label on the bottom. Write it down, so you can find it when you need it without having to repeatedly look at the bottom of the modem. Point your browser to http://192.168.0.1/You should see a page that looks like this. However, it might not have all of the details. If you don't see the "Connection Configuration" button, then click on "Advanced". I think that's when it asks for the modem access code. Then click on the "Connection Configuration" button. You should see a page that looks like this. About halfway down that page is a selection menu for "Connection Type". The three choices are "Connect on demand", Smart Connection", and "Always attempt to connect". Set it to "Always attempt to connect". Then click the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the screen. The effect of this change, is that you should be able to keep the same IP address for a lot longer. Those web pages are for the 5100b modem. But the 4100 modem is almost identical (but physically smaller), so they still apply. And here is the page for more than you ever wanted to know about your modem. Is it just me or does this sound really weird? I've done software installations and upgrades billions of times on millions of computers, and I've never had such difficulties before.
later update: I uninstalled all the parts of the printer software and one of them wouldn't uninstall no matter how I went about it. I shut off the computer and did it again and all that. It won't go away. I suspect this has to do with the last attempt to install it when it only got 96% finished. It won't print no matter what. So now I'm just taking a break, and tomorrow sometime I'll try another installation and hope if I do it according to the book that 1)it will just take the place of the fragment that won't uninstall, 2)it will alert me to plug it in at the right point, and 3) will completely install this time. Otherwise I've got real trouble I think.
It really shouldn't be this complicated.

Percy I now know why I was treated like an idiot when I called in for a replacement part. They sent me an sdram rather than a ddr like I ordered. The tech guy kept insisting that I was wrong, that I really had a ddr. I described the the memory module I had in my hand and he still didn't believe me that I had an sdram. He kept insisting that they sent the right part and I ordered the wrong thing. I finally told him ok I will just send it back to them and if it was indeed a ddr then they can just ship it back to me and charge me for shipping and handling.
I also recently got a burnt out sat receiver. Called them up to get a replacement and I had to go through 3 tech guys, all of whom asked me if it was plugged in. I used to work as a comp techie, so I know their pain. But being arrogantly judgemental I never was. Anyway, you'd be surprised to know how many people didn't know that the monitor is not the computer.

As per email instruction from Iano, I closed AOL, and have the VNC up and running again. The IP according to the icon is 71.142.141.66. The link Percy gave won't give me a number today at all for some reason. I tried three times.
My IE, or SBC, has AOL as a home page. For some reason it doesn't always load graphics. Most of the avatars and some of the buttons at EvC aren't loading. Edit: P.S. I'm going to be away from the computer for a while and my daughter may use it part of the time. But the VNC is running and if the number is correct she knows you may be looking at it. Never mind, I'm here for now. Edited by Faith, : No reason given. Edited by Faith, : No reason given. Edited by Faith, : No reason given. Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

Tools -> internet options -> general -> settings in temporary internet files -> automatically (or everytime you visit the page, whatever you want). If that doesn't work, we'll try something else.
In options, you can also change your homepage. AOL sounds like a pretty depressing homepage, don't you think?

I'm making this transition from AOL to SBC DSL which was an AOL offer, which I don't understand at all. Why are they selling me something that gets me to leave AOL? I'm happy enough to leave it, except that I really don't like the new email format, it's hard to figure out. I'm sure I'll eventually change the home page but I also don't care. Try the link Percy gave earlier where you find your IP - all whilst staying in IE. Post it here.

That's what I did, Ian, I tried the link three times, besides giving you the number at the icon, and the link gives me absolutely nothing, no number, a complete blank.

The IP address that Faith used to post Message 265 is identical to the IP address she stated in Message 261.
If you are unable to connect, it might be due to the Windows firewall. Compassionate conservatism - bringing you a kinder, gentler torture chamber

Thanks should also go out to Crash who, although I didn't take him up on his offer to configure a computer for me, did suggest the configuration I ultimately ordered from Dell. I'm trying to contain my jealously at your rockin' system. (No thanks are necessary, btw. Didn't I tell you I had fun doing it?) We finally got my wife's top-of-the-line Mac Pro to work with the phylogenetics programs that she needs to use. (The Intel-native version finally arrived a few days ago, but it's command-line only and so I sort of had to guess commands from her description of what she used to use menus to do.) On our way out the door to lunch, we decided to run a job and come back later to see how much faster the machine was. On her old machine the job usually took about 2 hours; we both expected it to be done sometime after we got back from lunch. She hit "execute" and it was done before she had risen from her chair. Less than 4 seconds. I'm a hopeless geek so I'm excited when I use VNC to schedule recordings on my MythTV box, but it takes a lot more to make her excited by technology. A four-second "boostrap" (whatever that means) seemed to do the trick, though.

Thanks NWR. Faith has PC-cillinn as her security suite. Would both firewalls be running or would PC-cillin turn off the windows one and leave its own running.
Would the thing to do be to close all websites but leave IE running then turn off firewalls to attempt a connection? She could turn back on at a prearranged time to give me time to check a connection. No ones said so far but I presume Faith could see what I am doing if I'm connected?

I'm making this transition from AOL to SBC DSL which was an AOL offer, which I don't understand at all. Why are they selling me something that gets me to leave AOL? Presumably they're going to try to sell you AOL for Broadband, or convince you not to cancel your AOL account, etc. I'm sure they'll be very happy to remind you - constantly - that you can still use all the AOL services you know and love over your new DSL connection. It used to be notoriously difficult to cancel AOL service. Maybe that's still true. The customer service people really go for the hard sell.
