Author | Topic: is the US sliding into Fascism? Evidence for and against | |||||||||||||||||||||||

I'm afraid we have already become a Fascist Nation. It began under Ronald Reagan and has continued to today. But we also have some safeguards not available in the countries you mentioned. We do have a Supreme Court and short term elections.
The big issue IMHO is whether or not the general citizenry want a Fascist Nation? Fascist governments are efficient and can react quickly to public opinion or frankly, suppress disenting opinion. While many may protest such acts in theory, I see equal numbers calling for such actions in fact. This extends across political bounds, across parties and across populus. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Almost all were freely elected. Once in office things changed, but one good example was that Mussolini was actually voted out of office and stepped down.

Actually, the courts did NOT ignore the Congress or the Prsident. They looked at the issue and made a decision. They decided not to overturn the lower rulings.

The duty of the courts is to INDEPENDANTLY decide issues, not to rubber stamp Congress or the Exectutive.

G.B. has a couple other advantages. One is having a confidential advisor who was Senator, President, Vice-President and head of the CIA. The value of that particularly when it comes to indepth knowldge of the behind the scenes players shouod not be underrated.
A second major advantage is the change in demographics and outlook of Industry since the 1930's. Today's industry is completely anti-nation. It is truly international in scope and sees the existence of nationhood, any nationhood, as simply a hinderance to efficient commerce. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Your sig applies to whoever came up with that title for the effort. Fortunately, the current crop of Republican talking heads are too stupid to have taken advantage of the opening.

there is no reason to think it would resemble Italy in the 1930s. The world today is a quite different place.
IMHO should Fascism return, it would not have much of a Nationalistic side except as a tool to control the populus. The functional Fascism would be most likely international and trans-national in nature. It would revolve around organizing the world's population and laws for the benefit of Business. The most likely signs would be the elimination of tariff borders, the vast mobility of industry to relocate as needed on a short term basis, evolving communications and transportation infrastructure, loosening of restrictions on the exploitation of both human and natural resources. It depends on what Is means.
There are all kinds of ways to determine who is in power at any given moment in the US and fortunately, the methods are as flexible as biblical interpretation. You can get any answer you want. There is:
and if you still don't get the answer you want it's the fault of the Judicial branch and the biased media. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Or maybe we should have realized that there was no problem that we should be involved in in the first place and dropped the no-fly zone, dropped the containment policy, dropped the idea of a CIA overthrow and stayed out of it.
The waste of precious resources here has been great. We have concentrated on one area and totally lost sight of the objective. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Walk away.
Not exactly. Probably stay out in the first place. Iraq is a threat to the other nations in the area. It is really they who need to make a few decisions about what will happen there. We need to stop being one who makes such decisions. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Well, I disagree.
Most of the problems in the middle east are the direct result of US and European meddling. It's time we stepped back and told them to start acting like nation states. There is no doubt that Iraq under Saddam was a threat to the area and his neighbors. To even hint that he could be a threat to the US in the forceable future is IMHO a stretch. But Iran, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, India, Turkey, North Korea, China and a half dozen of the former soviet republics could be described in exactly the same terms. We helped create the mess there and we need to do something to help clean up the mess we made, but I really think we're not going about it the right way. If Saddam's neighbors were not worried enough about him to do the containing, was there enough reason to think he was a threat? Aslan is not a Tame Lion

I'm certainly not recommending isolationism, far from that. There is a whole range of options between the two extremes.
But we're getting way, way off topic so let's see if we can head back towards the subject. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

I did not say no monitoring but there is a lot of monitoring that could be done without an invasion.
I also do not preclude other folk taking action. There is no reason I can see that the UN shouldn't have a lead role in such situations. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

As usual, the Government has some pretty screwed up computer and information systems, but what's new.
Here is a link to over 200 pages of INDIVIDUALs and their related organizations where available that are listed. Note, the list does not seem to include all the updates (another 22 pages) listed at this site. I remember finding a list not too many months ago that showed some of the organizations, and being shocked that it had grown from about twenty or so major recognized terrorist organizations to literally thousands. If I can find it I'll post a link here. Aslan is not a Tame Lion
