They're quite rare, but not so out of the ordinary that they shouldn't be expected. There's one strong enough to be newsworthy every year or so. list
I suspect that list is missing a lot- I remember hearing about several that aren't listed there.

Punishment from Above
molbiogirl quoting FSTST forum writes:
[We legally recognise gays. Gays can have a gay marriage here in Britain, there are gay nightclubs all over Britain and the British public are tolerant of homosexuals. Why is it that we don't get these earthquakes? Are we special?]
"Why is it that we don't get these earthquakes yet?"
the element of surprise in the divine punishment is the most amusing
al-nasser, ummah forum [Comments (78)] [2008-Feb-24]
BBC writes:
A man suffered a broken pelvis when a chimney collapsed in South Yorkshire.
One of the biggest killer earthquakes I can remember in recent years was the one in the Islamic theocracy of Iran (about 30,000 people, I think). And Allah recently punished devout Kashmir with thousands of deaths.
The earthquake was felt all over this island, and we infidels, with our same sex marriages, get one broken pelvis between 60 million of us.
Allah is certainly surprising, as the man said!

The BGS say one of this magnitude comes along roughly every 30 years http://www.earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk/...et_rasen_27_feb_2008.pdf

Small World
It seems there's 3 of us from Hull then! Really is a small world. How did Hull cope with the quake? (I live and work in the midlands now).

Well, you may know the place better than I do, as I'm not a native, so the answer is probably with the usual blunt, tough stoicism, mixed with humour, and an eye to the possibilties of making false claims on the insurance companies.
Actually, I've seen no signs of damage around here, and we're only about 30 miles from the epicentre. Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire seem to have taken the real damage.
I was awake sitting at this machine, which is why I started the thread, and the effect was impressive, but nothing fell over.

Re: Small World
I managed to sleep through it all, although other people I know said they felt it. There was also a ceiling tile on the floor in one of the offices at work, which I can only assume was from the earthquake. Other than the guy with the chimney I haven't heard of any actual damage though.

I live 5 km away from the epicentre, and it was pretty damn loud and scary. I was on the internet in bed and suddenly the quake started but I didn't realise it was a quake at the time. It got louder and louder, and stuff started falling my desk. At one point I thought it was a missile or fighter jet coming. Pretty scary.
I talked to a few people the next day and everyone told me how at first they thought it was this or that. Lots of people's gut reactions were that it was ghosts or aliens or something like that. Kind of shows how humans think when they're in a primal state of shock.

Interesting. Until now, me and TheMatt here in Hull were the nearest. But nothing fell off my desk, or anywhere in the house, so it must've been a lot more serious right over the epicentre.
You can tell that it didn't cause much worries here, because this thread was started a few minutes after the event, time enough to check that the only other person in the house was O.K.
The noise was striking, though, because the biggest one I was in, in Greece, everthing was silent, and sitting outside a cafe, it just felt like being at sea.
