...was my first car, and I got my license in 1975. About 3 years later, just before I got a new car, the Beetle was kept running with a rubber band on the carburetor. In that condition, me and 3 of my friends used it to travel to New Orleans for a Stones concert. On the way back, the fanbelt broke and I had one of the most ingenious ideas I've ever had. One of the passengers was a girl, and I had her remove her pantyhose. I cut off one leg and tied it round the flywheel and alternator. It worked, and got us as far as McComb where we stopped and got a proper fanbelt.
